Meteorological observations taken at the Observatory. f'hrisW'hurch, at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on April 23:
Other Centres Auckland—Exceptionally wet weather was experienced yesterday, rain falling almost continuously from early morning until evening without any indication of ceasing. The wind was light from the north-east during the morning, and from the south-west after mid-day. The barometer fell to 29.90 in. Wellington—The weather was mostly cloudy with a boisterous northerly wind, the highest gust being of G4 miles an hour. The temperature was 63.6 degrees. Dunedin— Beautifully fine and warm weather prevailed in Dunedin yesterday, the heat of the sun being tempered by a light variable wind. The maximum temperature was 74 degrees. *The barometer fell sharply on Sunday, but rose yesterday and became steady about 29.50 in.
FORECAST (From readings taken at 4 p.m.) General Situation —A deep depression extends from the Eastern Tasman
across New Zealand, while an intense anti-cyclone covers the whole of Australia. Winds—Strong northerly to westerly, of gale force in many places, backing to south-westerly shortly in southern districts; southerlies becoming general within from 24 to 36 hours. Seas (New Zealand waters) —Rough. Eastern Tasman Sea —Strong west to south-west winds to gales; rough to heavy seas. Weather —Unsettled and squally generally, with rain at times and further heavy falls in western districts. Temperatures becoming cold during tomorrow, with snow on the ranges.
