YOUTH WORK IN GERMANY

DIFFICULTIES OF Y.M.C.A

"In the last few months the Young Men's Christian Association has been having a great struggle in Germany because its leaders are not ofhcially allied to the Nazis," said Mr A. J. McEldowney, secretary to Die association in Christchurch, to a reporter yesterday. Mr McEldowney was commenting on a cablegram printed yesterday which stated that the association would be permitted to continue as a separate organisation, confining its activities to propagating the gospel among young men of 18 and older. Mr "McEldowney said that at one stage Mr Eric Stange, national secretary" to the association in Germany, was dismissed from his seat on the United Christian Youth Council because he was not an adherent to the Nazi platform. The last news Mr McEldowney had from Geneva was to the effect that the world secretary there was to intervene, stating to lieu Hitler that the association was a world movement and was strictly nonpolitical, and as such coukl not identify itselC with any party.

Erfurt (Germany), a city noted lor its florists and seedsmen, has set its unemployed to work building a zoological garden. When completed the zoo will specialise in the many wild creatures which still exist in Central Europe, and of which there are several varieties practically unknown to the general public. Elk, deer, spotted cicer, and wild swine will be kept in roomy enclosures, while suitable accommodation is planned for housing martens, badgers, and weasels. Beavers and otters will be kept in a scientifically arranged stream. The zoo will help to give a better understanding ot wild lue to the thousands of people who are increasingly spending their holidays in the open.
