A SUNSPOT
DOMINION OBSERVATORYEXPERTS AMUSED (PRF.SB ASSOCIATION TF.T.MRAM.) WELLINGTON, April 23. Experts at the Dominion Observa-j tory at Kelburn showed amusement, with a little indignation about the possible effect on (he public, wlien the San Francisco cablegram published today. announcing the appearance of a "giant" sunspot, the precursor of "climatic upheavals of a record nature," was referred to them. The reply given was that the statements in the cablegram were mainly absurd, and that whatever their authority was it was hardly possible that they had originated from any of the responsible American astronomers. The present sunspot was not extremely large. It had been estimated at the observatory to have the largest diameter at the nucleus of 17,000 miles, and a penumbra diameter of up to 28,000 miles. This is several times bigger than the earth, but was not particularly unusual l'or the sun. Many sunspots very much larger had been found to have little or no eiTect ! on the conditions on the earth.
