ANZAC DAY

+ TO-MORROW'S SERVICES PARADE THROUGH CITY To-morrow is Anzac Day. Throughout New Zealand services will be held in commemoration of the sacrifice and gallantry of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps on April 25, 1915, and during the months that followed on Gallipoli. In Christchurch a parade of returned soldiers and others will be held through the city, followed by a service at King Edward Barracks, and services will be held in the suburbs and provincial towns. Wearing the medals they won in Egypt, Gallipoli, Palestine, and France, the returned soldiers of Christchurch will parade at Cranmer square at 1.45 p.m. At 2 o'clock the parade will move off in the following order:—The gun-carriage and firing party, wreath bearers, the veterans, Imperial former service men headed by "Old Contemptibles" living in Canterbury, former members of the Australian Imperial Forces, members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in their various units, the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, the territorials and cadets. Colonel J. Murphy will be in command of the returned soldiers. The parade will march down Kilmore street and along Victoria street and Colombo street through the Square. From Colombo street it will turn into Cashel street and proceed to the Bridge of Remembrance, where a halt will be made while a wreath is laid at the foot of the arch. As a mark of respect to their fallen comrades the returned soldiers will cross the bridge bareheaded. When the parade assembles at the barracks the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) will preside over the memorial service. Amongst those taking part will be the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. Dr. Campbell West-Watson), the Rev. F. T. Read, the Rev. O. FitzGerald, the Rev. W. Grigg, the Rev. O. W. Williams, M.C., and {he Rev. A. McNeur. The address will be given by Colonel D. Colquhoun, D.5.0., of Wellington. At the opening of the service Chopin's Funeral March will be played by the orchestra of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association, conducted by Mr H. G. Glaysher, formerly of the band of his Majesty's Royal Regiment of Artillery. The anthem, "Land of Hope and Glory," will be sung by the association's choir, conducted by Mr V. C. Peters. "Last Post" and "Reveille" will be sounded by buglers of the Canterbury Regiment. After the service the wreath-bearers will march to the Cathedral, where their wreaths will be deposited on stands outside the building. Members of the executive of the association will then go to the Bromley Cemetery, where they will place a poppy on each grave in the soldiers' portion of the cemetery. A similar observance will be made at the Sydenham Cemetery, where the large number of soldiers' graves will be honoured by Ihe combined suburban committees of Sydenham, Addington, Spreydon, and Beckenham. The St. John Ambulance Association will not take part in the parade but will have detachments along the line of march and at the barracks. A parade will be held in Barbadoes street during the morning. Returned soldiers will assemble at 9.45 and will inarch 1o the Catholic Cathedral, the St. Bede's College Cadets forming a guard of honour. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 o'clock, and Father J. Spillane, S.M., will give an address A choir of priests will sing the Gregorian Chant. At Sumner a service will'be held in the Town Hall at 11 a.m., after a parade from the corner of Grafton street and the Esplanade, past the war memorial, where wreaths will be placed: A parade will be formed at (he Band Hall, New Brighton, at 10.15 to march to the Cenotaph, where a memorial service will be held at 10.30. The Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E. A. M. Leaver) will preside. The Rev. W. Grigg will give the address, the Rev. T. M. Curnow will take the scriptural reading, the Rev. S. Bailey will lead the prayers, and the hymns will be announced by Captain M. Cobb. The parade will be led by the New Brighton Municipal Band, which will play Chopin's Funeral March and the music for the hymns. At Riccarton a memorial service will be held at the Wharenui School Memorial Gates at 9.30 a.m. The Mayor of Riccarton (Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P.) will preside. A combined service will be held at the Lyttelton Cenotaph at 10.30 a.m. The Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr W. T. Lester) will preside. Services will be held by the Waltham School Ex-Pupils' Association at the Waltham Park Memorial Gates at 9 a.m., by the Christchurch Boys' High School Old Boys' Association at the School Shrine at 11 a.m., and by other organisations and centres round Christchurch.
