COMPULSORY LEVY SUGGESTED
♦ FINANCE FOR AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION That lie had heard it suggested that the St. John Ambulance Association was seeking to have legislation introduced to Parliament, aiming at making it compulsory for local bodies to pay a l"v,v for the financing ol the association's service, was mentioned by Cr. W. G. Chapman at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council last evening. The. council had before it a report from the association, dealing with service calls and the proposed scheme for grants from local bodies. "We shall have to watch this association," said Mr Chapman. "The association is apparently preparing a bill which will make a compulsory levy on local bodies such as the council. It was mentioned at a meeting of the Heathcote County Council recently. We shall have to watch the matter closely." "I do not think that the Government will let any bill through levying a rate on local bodies,'' commented the chairman, Mr W. P. Spencer. Cr. W. J. Walter: They might sneak in with it in the dark. The crunril decided to consider the report from tiie association when councillors are dealing with the estimates.
