DAIRY INDUSTRY

WAIKATO PROPOSALS

COMPLAINT ABOI'T DICTATION

TO ENGLAND

(I-IIESE ASSQC'IVUOJ.' 'iEI.SGRAM.) HAMILTON, April 21. "There has been far too much dictation to Great Britain on the part of the dairy industry and its administrators in New Zealand." stated Mr E. Runnerstrum, managing director of the Waikato Valley. Dairy Company, Frankton, in commenting on the dairy rtpsiiion to-day. Some of the measures he proposed lor the revival of the industry were the revaluation of all farm property -with safeguards to avoid speculation; a refund on freights; the prohibition of the manufacture of all second-grade and whey butter: the derating of farm lands. Mr Run nostrum said it was time the producers of the linest butter were no longer penalised by (he small proportion of those who made whey. '•lf we put our own house in order by slaughtering all unsound cows and relinquishing the present stubborn attitude concerning tariffs, we would create an enormous goodwill in Great Britain, and goodwill is the foundation of business," he added. The new vacuum process was bound to score in the future because the frozen article had never been the same as the fresh article, and never would be. He opposed an alteration in the: exchange rate unless similar aclion were taken by Australia. Otherwise, New Zealand would be undercut on the dairy produce market. He had always opposed quotas, but the country had to face the facts and the biggest fact was that New Zealand yras not in a position to dictate. Mr Runnerstrum considered the appointment of a commission was the' best step the Government could have taken. •; CABINET MEETS i . J PERSON«EL OF COMMISSION LTHE PRESS Special Service! WELLINGTON, April 21. Cabinet to-day considered the personnel of the Royal Commission to enquire into the dairying industry, and jt is expected that an announcement Will be made on Monday.
