THE RABBIT PEST
in niL I:DIH>II OK tiik IMESS. Sir, — lam sure that the relief workers of Canterbury will appreciate Mr Elisor's letter, which appeared in the columns of "The Press" the other day. directing attention to Ihe need for-an organised combat against the rabbits. This is work that a big number of lis could engage in with advantage to all concerned. If farmers and others owning land will only organise I am sure 110 difficulty will be encountered in getting together a band of workers consisting of experienced and non-experienccd inc-n. This is a job Uiat needs a man's determination, and as most of us have become used to working out of doors in all weathers and in coimiry places. 110 difficulty should be experienced in this direction. Mr Ensor predicts a good price Tor winter .skins. This will be a great inducement for a lot of us to take 011 rabbiting, and should land us at the end of the winter satisfied and with a good cheque. I hope Mr Ensor will lead in this matter as he is well up in details of the work, and I have no dcubt the Government Labour Department will render assistance in selecting the most suitable men for the work.—Yours, etc., ' DILIGENCE. April 21. I<m.
TO THE EDITOR OF TH£ FBESS. Sir.—l would advise any district which wants to get rabbits under, and perhaps get rid of them, to get in touch with the East Coast. Rabbit Board, Marlborough. In speaking on poisons, Mr Ensor knows his rabbit, and he is right when he says that some methods of coping with the pest do more harm than good. The slogan when rabbit killing should be "kill the does." and most methods do just the opposite; so when the war is over and the landowner thinks, by the look of things, that he had made a tolerably clean sweep, it is Mrs Brer Rabbit that is lying low in the burrows, ready to repopulate with big litters in the spring. Every rabbit killed then is more important than 10 or more killed in the winter.— Yours, etc..
