RED CROSS SOCIETY

JUNIOR BRANCH FORMED A junior branch of the Red Cross Society—the first in the South Islandwas formed at Tai Tapu last week, when a deputation comprising Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, Mr and Mrs Cyrus Williams-, Mrs R. McLachlan, and Miss V. Hynes, with the permission of the headmaster, Mr A. Thompson, addressed the senior pupils at the Tai Tapu School. Mr Cyrus Williams explained the usefulness of the work that could be done by a junior branch of the society, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes emphasised the international character of the Red Cross Society, and Mrs McLachlan premised the help of the sub-centre. The following officers were elected: Patron. Mr A. Thompson; president, Mary Studholme; secretary, Joy Garnett; treasurer, Alma McLeod. A committee will be elected at the first meeting. Miss Hynes offered a prize to the pupil who, in the opinion of the headmaster, is most thoughtful and kindly at school. GIFT PARTY AND DANCE A pleasant gift party and dance were held at the home of Mr and Mrs D. McDonald (Stanmore road) in honour of Miss Rita Grammer's approaching marriage. The time passed pleasantly with dancing and progressive euchre. Novelty dances were won by Mr Neil McDonald and partner, and Miss Mavis Dixon. Euchre prize-winners were Miss Bone, Mr Owens, and Mr C. Miles.

Mr R. Tonge gave a tap and eccentric dance, and other items were given by Misses Pat and Billie Aldridge, Joan Gracie. Joan Owens, and Elwyn McDonald. Dance music was supplied by Mr B. Smart, and Mr W. Gracie was master of ceremonies.

Mr H. McDonald and Mr W. Grammer thanked the guests on behalf of Miss Grammer.

WEST OF ENGLAND SOCIETY'S i DANCE Though the attendance of new friends was not. as large as was anticipated at the opening of the Canterbury West of England Society's season, there was a real harvest of pleasurable entertainment, and the evening gave every assurance that the coming season was going to excel last year. In opening the carnival dance and welcoming those present, Mr P. E. L. Broad, the retiring president, introduced Ihe new president, Mr A. H. Emerson, and spoke on his behalf in outlining the new syllabus. It was hoped the society would attain greater popularity in the coming year, as a result of the interesting programme arranged. . Dancing was enjoyed till midnight under the leadership of the F. Inns orchestra. An extra valetta, played by Mr Broad, was greatly appreciated. Prizes were presented to Mrs H. Haigh and Mr R. Stephens for the lucky spot waltz and Miss A. Shinner and Mr A. Boulton for the Monte Carlo dance, while Mrs R. Rhodes and Mr May were the recipients of the lucky entrance tickets prize. Mr J. Sim was master of ceremonies.
