MOUNT TORLESSE VISITED

ASCENT BY STUDENTS

In ideal weather a party of Canterbury College students, under the leadership of Mr B. A. Barrer, spent a pleasant week-end camping in Happy Valley, from which they made the ascent of a part of Mount Torlcssc. Leaving the Students' Union rooms at 5.30 on Saturday the students, who were mostly members of the College Tramping Club, travelled by bus to Happy Valley, which they reached shortly after eight. Tents were pitched, but, since the night was fine, many preferred to sleep outside in the shelter of the tussocks. The complete absence of snow on the tops and a light north-west wind made the ascent easy, and the climbers reached the summit of the Rubicon Peak before noon. Descending by way of the Hurtle Beauty couloir, the party made good time, and the return to the city was made about eight o'clock.
