The spectacle of a constable on a bicycle chasing a stag was watched by crowds of shoppers in Brentwood, Essex, recently. The stag got away over the fields, but finally doubled back, and, seeing its reflection in the window of the White Hart motor showroom, promptly leapt through the window, smashing the glass to pieces, and damaging a new car which was on show inside. Two butchers' assistants lassooed the stag with ropes and took it to the back of the hotel. It had escaped from Weald Park, where a herd is kept. It was claimed by keepers, but was so badly injured that it was shot on the spot.
