SOME SHAMBLE WINS

HURLINGHAM AGAIN SUCCESSFUL

KACES AT WASHDYKE

[From Our Own Reporter.]

TIMARU. April 21

The South Canterbury Jockey Club was favoured with ideal weather for its autumn meeting, held at Washdyke to-day, and there was a large assemblage of racegoers from all parts. The track was slightly holding for the early races, but improved as the day progressed. The racing throughout was interesting, with good finishes in ail events. Well-filled and evenlybalanced fields set investors some difficult tasks, and dividend-payers were hard to locate, but the public showed good judgment, and in consequence speculation was well maintained. The sum of £10,141 was handled under the two dividend system. Last yeai s autumn meeting was held on a Thursday and a Saturday, and the totahsator investments on that occasion under the win and place system were fcOHU 10s and £BB7O respectively, so that the result of Saturday's fixture must be considered very satisfactory Other sources of revenue also showed an increase, so a useful profit should be recorded. The principal event, the rescnemaker Handicap, was won in a convincing manner by Some Shamble, winner of the Waimate Cup on Thursday. He again made light work ot his task and must now be included in the li=t of the South Island's best middle distance performers. Ho has been most consistent in the last lew months and lias scored three successes I and two second plaeings in his last six starts. He was ridden in each of his wins by G. Humphries, who piloted him specially well in his two races last week. The Doncaster Handicap was won by Hurlingham, who under his solid weight of 9-2 gave one of his best, performances to date. He is now trained at Oamaru by his owner, and in his present order will win many more races. Rebel Star added to his already good record by winning the Rosewill Hack Handicap from end to end, and a similar performance was credited to Red Dance. Imperial Spear had an overdue win in the maiden class, and Fleeting Glance scored another popular success for her Greymouth owner, who also secured a third placing with Silver Sight. The meeting was, as usual, well conducted, and the smooth running of the programme and the punctuality observed reflected much credit on the various officials. Gallivanter and Arcade set a fast pace from the early stages and with half the journey covered they were well clear of Sunward, with another gap to Gold Knight and Fleeting Glance, Rasouli and Aduit being at the tail of the field. Arcade retired before reaching the home turn. and Fleeting Glance, Adult, and Gold Knight moved up to Gallivanter, and these were bunched at the last fence. Fleeting Glance soon assumed command in the run home and won easily by three lengths from Adult, who wore down Sunward to beat him by a neck. Gallivanter was two lengths back and was followed by Gold Knight, Rasouli, Morcna, and Arcade. Fleeting Glance had a convincing win and her two successes over hurdles to date have gone a long way to reward her owner for a long list of minor placings. She was ridden a well-judged race by H. Turner, who was responsible for most of her early schooling. Adult showed a creditable effort in his first attempt over battens. He did net jump one fence cleanly and was well _in the rear three furlongs from hoine. He had to gallop fast to make up his ground and his possession of speed will bo useful later when lie has acquired the art of jumping. Sunward is a promising hurdler by Lord Quex from Sundust. and will earn distinction during the winter. Gallivanter and Arcade both ran themselves out. Rasouli gave a disappointing display and. narrowly missed falling at the last fence. Goid Knight also did not race up to expectations. He was in a commanding position at the last fence but failed to finish on. Morcna blundered badly at two fences and was never near the leaders.

A Solid Galloper JU'd Dance, rehandieaped (>lb for his | Waimate win. was in most demand for the Sinitlificld Hack Handicap, and ho justified his position by being in the van throughout. Ho was followed early by Cheap Money and Money Flies, and tlie.se: were joined by Double Shot, Draeula, and Brown Pearl rounding the home turn. Red Da nee was lirst into Ihe straight, and although challenged by Brown Pearl and Draeula over the final stages, he field them off to win easily from Brown Pearl, who beat Draeula by a neck. Demise came from a rear position to gain fourth place, in front of Cheap Money, Double Shot, and Money Flies. Beet Dance showed a most attractive performance and was going away from his pursuers at the business end. Brown Pearl improved on her Waimate form and Draeula ran another good race. Denise was a long way from the leaders at the end of half the .tourney and did well to get into the picture. Cheap Money was always prominent and will do better later. Heather Glow and Sibella were always well back. Favourite Beaten Skv Wink created a surprise by winning'the Olipua Trot from barrier rise. He was followed early by Waving Corn, Guv Mauritius. Irish Peach, and Adsum, and led round the home turn and into Ihe straight from Irish Peach. Great Seaman, and Guy Mauritius. The leader evaded all challenges and won decisively by a length from Guy Mauritius, who got up to beat Irish Peach by half a length. Adsum was close up next in front of Snowy tie Oro, Epilogue, and Captain Heath.

Some Shamble Again Impresses

The Smuggler caricd more than 100 tickets more than Some Shamble in the TcschcmakcT Handicap, but the latter had the race in hand two furlongs from heme, while The Smuggler was beaten out of a place. Chrysology hopped away with the lead, and at the ecven furlong post was fully live lengths in front of Some Shamble, with a lesser gap to Kemal Pasha, The Smuggler, Davolo, Cough, and Hanelagh. witli Shatter in last place with Red Racer. Some Shamble gradually reduced the leeway going through "the back stretch, and Clirysology had only a length advantage from'him entering the straight, with Th., Smuggler, Kemal Pasha, and Shatter closing up. Some Shamble had Chrysology settled as soon as the run home was" entered upon, and although Chrysoiogy held on to him. he beat him comfortably by a neck. In a close lussle for third money, Shatter got up to beat Kemal Pasha, with Palmary and The Smuggler in close attendance. Davolo. Ranelagh, and Cough followed in that order. | Some Shamble, as at Waimale, had the race in hand early in the run home, and the time. 2min G 2-. r >sec, for the journey was good under the track conditions. Chrysology surprised many, not by his tearaway tactics, but by staying on so well after having to make his own running throughout, lie appeared to be done with when Some Shamble drew up tu and passed him, but came again over the concluding stages, and hung to his task in a most unusual manner for him. Shatter w ; as struggling in the rear with Red Racer until the home turn'was passed, and when he made a forward move at; the distance his followers had cause to be pleased, but under pressure he ran aboutmore than usual, and did not seem abie on the soft track to settle down to serious business. Kemal Pasha was never in better than fourth place, while Davolo was palpably in want uf the race. The Smuggler was somewhat disappointing, as he looked exceptionally well, and had executed an encouraging gallop on Friday morning. He has always been partial to a soft track, but the mixed variety of the surface on Saturday probably did not suit him. Ranelagh should have made a more prominent showing, but both he and Cough would have done better on firmer ground. Red Racer took up an unusual role for him, occupving a rear position throughout.

An Overdue Win Itnperial Spear won his first race in accounting fur a bis field in the Electric Stakes. He was never far away from the leaders, and followed Disguise, June the Third, and Elbafior to tire straight, with Nightform and Wild Sky handy. Disguise was still in charge at (lie distance, but Imperial Spear then drew out, and went on to win in an easy manner from Wild Sky. Wonderful finished fast on the outside, and cut Disguise out of third money on the post. Nightform and Elbnnor headed the remainder. Imperial Spear had disappointed several times previously, following good track work, but his form in this race would point to further successes for him. Wild Sky ran a solid race after being unfavourable' placed during the middle stages, and a longer journey [ would have .suited him better. Wonderful was not prominent until the last

furlong, and his effort was full of merit. Disguise attracted attention by her prominence for more than half a mile. Elbanor was in a likely j position to the straight entrance, but could not finish on, . while Inday Night again ran greenly, and was al- | ways well back. High Class Hack Rebel Star was a Pfonou""d Javourite for the Kosewill Hack Handicap and by leading throughout and winning in a decisive niannci he stamped himself as one oJ he hacks in commission m the &oum. Island. He was followed eaily by Cash Silver Sight Footwork Grand Review, and laiVs March and .it the , straight entrance had a clear advai -, tage from Crash, Grand Review Foo,-! work. High Rank, and lan b Maich., Grand Review made a ee, effort to get up to Rebel Star, bu-the latter was not seriousy troubled to ( win by a length. Silver Sight finished strongly into third place two lengths away, a similar d.c.ancc in front of High Rank. Lan s Maicn, Footwork, and Cleaner were next Rebel Star had the field strugghug throughout, and will soon be tackling open company. He finished on so well that a mile and a quarter would not have found him out. Grand lieview added to her fairly consistent form, and it was unlucky for her that she encountered such an outstanding hack as the winner. Silver Sight made another game effort under his solid impost for a horse of his proportions. High Rank looked likely turning for home, and will be improved by the race. Foe work ran another promising race, but Cleaner failed to finish on as usual, apparently owing to her inability to carry much weight. Crash did well to the straight entrance, and should return to winning form later. Strong Light was never prominent, and Water Polo retired in the straight, after racing in the middle of the field to that point. Losses Recouped Irish Peach made amends for her previous defeat b- winning the Gladstone Trot after an interesting finish. Colleen Chenault acted as pacemaker from the dispatch, and led Repeal, Irish Peach, Trireme, and Guy Mauritius into the back stretch. Repeal broke up shortly afterwards, and retired to the rear. Colleen Chenault was still in charge into the run home from Irish Peach, Levity, and Guy Mauritius. Irish Peach headed the leader inside the distance, and although challenged by Levity, won by a length and a half. Guy Mauritius was a similar distance away, clear of Colleen Chenault, with Red Flier and Shorelcave next.

Hurlingham Again A pool totalling' more than £IBOO 1 was recorded in the Doncastcr Handi-! cap, Hurlingham being made an oddson favourite. Royal Amphora showed out in front after a furlong had been covered, and was then joined by Dollar Prince. This pair led round the top from Lord Argosy, Hurlingham. and Silver Streak. Dollar Prince was j first into the straight from Royal Amphora, Silver Streak, and Hurlingham. Royal Amphora did not last long, and Hurlingham soon had Dollar Prince's measure. Water Power, who was last away, then appeared on the scene, and threw out v. determined challenge, but Hurlingham responded well, and won by a length. Dollar Prince tired into third place two lengths away, and there was then a gap of four lengths to' Royal Amphora. Silver Streak and Rin Tin Tin were next. Hurlingham was always going like a winner, and his price, although limited, was surprisingly good. Water Power tailed off early, and did not settle down to serious work until well into the straight. She then made a remarkably strong run, suggestive of better results from her during the winter. Dollar Prince closed up in Ihc last 100 yards, hut his first effort in open company was nevertheless satisfactory. Royal Amphora looked a likely winner at the straight entrance, but failed to finish on. Silver Streak showed that his recent mishap has left no ill-effects, and this race would serve to bring him on again. Rm Tin Tin was not in a galloping mood, but Lord Argosy gave a creditable display for five furlongs.
