OBSERVANCE AT BURWOOD

Tin' An/;.c Day service, under the auspices of the Burwood sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, v.-a-; held yesterday morning in Alt Saints' Church. The service was con-1 dueled by the Rev. C. A. Tobin. _ In addition to a large congregation,! there were present members of the Burwood sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association. Messrs W. E. Lcadley. A. L. Emmorson. and G. Dabourn.' representing the executive of the Christchurch branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association. Messrs 11. lileasdale ichairman* and H. E. Hellion (honorary secretary l of the Richmond sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, the thirteenth coinpanv of the Burwood girl guides, members of the Burwood memorial committee, members of the Burwood School Committee, and girls from the Burwood Girls' Home. 'Die service commenced with Ihe singing of a verse of the National AnI ham, after which Mr Tobin received the wreaths at the steps of the chancel. In his address Mr Tobin spoke ot (he ideal for which the men whose memory they were honouring had died. It was the ideal of peace, he said, and it was. owing to their memory that the living should do till they could to make that ideal an established fact. After the service the congregation marched to the grave of Mr R. K. Thompson, who died from war wounds, and was buried in the church cemetery. Mr Wright, ihe chairman of the Bur\voo:l sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, placed a wreath on the grave and others present placed red poppies on the grave. The porcession then marched to Ihe Burwood memorial for fallen soldier-. Mr Tobin received the wreaths. The guard of honour was formed by the members of Ihe Returned Soldiers' Association, and the thirteenth company of (he Burwood .qirl guides. Mr W. E. Leadley gave the address. Floral tributes were placed on the memorial by the Burwood sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, the Burwood Memorial Committee the Burwood school children, the Burwood Girls' Home, (.he thirteenth coinpanv Burwood girl guides, the Junior Red Cross Circle of n lc Burwood Girl.' llome, and Mr and Mrs Rouse and iainilv.
