L. ; Davy's tobacconist shop and hair- I 1 dressing saloon, forming a portion I ; of the Coronation Hotel block, a j large wooden building in a crowded . I portion of the town. The brigade j I responded very quickly, and only its j ' promptness saved the whole block j ! from destruction. A slight westerly j ' wind was blowing at the time. 1 The fire had a good hold when dis- | covered, the first signs being break- < ing glass. The flames spread on each ! side of. Mr Davy's shop, affecting Mr |T. R. Gordon's jewellery shop very ' badly, and Mr A. W. J. Mann's ■ chemist shop to a slight degree, I though the hitter's stock was badly i damaged by water. The flames spread , upward into the Coronation Hotel, j j the roof being badly charred in | I places, and ei;;ht bedrooms were j I damaged by fire and water. i The insurances are: Coronation i Hotel, furniture £2BOO in the Sun 1 and Norwich offices, £17,000 on the building in the Home office; MiDavy's stock, £6OO in the Standard office (total damage estimated at £BSO to £900); Mr Gordon's stock £SOO in the Victoria Insurance Co. (total damage estimated at £I6OO or '£1700) ; Mr Mann's slock £ISOO •in the Royal office (damage esti- - I mated at £750).
