—♦— — RANGIORA The Mayor and Mayoress iMr and Mrs W. A. Rowse* left yesterday by motor on a holiday visit to Nelson. They will be away from Rangiora about a, fortnight. Miss N. Shankkmd. who has been cmploved in the Rangiora Borough Council office for the last six years, and who has resigned, was met yesterday by the members oil the borough start "and presented with a wristlet watch. Mr Arnold Hall, of Christchurch, has been appointed assistant in the Rangiora Borough Council office. There were 56 applicants for the position. George Arliss heads the cast in '"A Successful Calamity.'' a comedy-drama to be screened at the Rangiora Town Hall this afternoon and to-night. The picture, which appeals to the whole family, tells the story of a millionaire who pretends to become poor and so finds that he has a fine, loving family instead of one which only looks upon him as a provider of the means to lead a gay life.

She was taken to hospital. CHEVIOT The Cheviot Tennis Club clo.mjcl a suevessful season with a Yankee tournament. Men's and women's doubles ■uere played for trophies given by the club. Miss 11. Savage and Miss D. Harrison won the women's doubles, and Messrs F. D. Chi Ids and S. Denton won the men's doubles. An interesting feature of the tournament was the playing of the finals of the Cheviot Tennis Club championships. These games were very keenly contested. The championship winners were:- Seniors: Women's singles. Miss If. McDonald: men's singles, M. Taylor: women's doubles. Miss H. McDonald and Miss G. Morgan; lien's doubles-, F. D. Childs and S. The Cheviot club gave miniature cups to the winners of the .senior women's singles championship and the senior men's singles championship, and trophies for all the oth.r championship winners. The Mackenzie Tennis Club has coneluded its handicap singles tournament. Miss G. Morgan won the lea set given by Mrs G. Strulhers and Mr M. Tavlor won the trophy given by the president. Mr C. F. Holton. The Cheviot Golf Club will hold its opening day on the Cheviot links this afternoon. The programme includes a mixed foursomes match, players to choose their own partners and opponents. The prizes for this match have been given by Mr H. G. G. Westenra. The Fuller buttons will also be played for. The weather at Cheviot during the last few days has been dull and unsettled. Thick fogs have been frequent and the temperature at night has been cold. The Ihreshing mills are still at work in the district, but have almost completed the wheat threshing. Some of the grain that had been stacked has been affected by the recent heavy fall of eight inches of rain, and will take a week or two to dry out. The damage caused by the heavy rain was not very serious and consisted mostly of shingle being scoured from the roads and from bridge approaches. It was fortunate that the rain ceased quickly as all rivers and creeks were carrying an immense volume of waler and several bridges were entirely submerged.

HORNBY The committee of the Hornby Amateur Swimming Club met on Thursday evening. Mr A. E. Grubb presided. The Hornby School Committee wrote complimenting the club on the manner in which the baths were controlled and recommended that children not be allowed in the baths on Sunday. The treasurer reported that the competition had showed a proiit of £3 3s and the dance a profit of 17s, and that the club had a credit balance of £6 18s. It was decided to hold the annual ball in the Islington Hall. The annual meeting of the Hornby branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Orange Hall, Mrs J. Gunderson presiding. PREBBLETGN Mr and Mrs H. Riches and thenfamily left this week for their new home at Killinchy. Mr and Mrs G. Hancox and family have returned to Prebbleton and have taken up their residence at "Nordlaw." Mrs Ford is spending a week's holiday in Christchurch. Miss James, who spent several weeks with her sister, Mrs Hubert Jones, at the vicarage, has returned to Dunedin. The monthly meeting of the Prebbleton branch of the Mothers" Union was held in the parish hall. The enrolling member, Mrs Hubert Jones, read the special form of service prepared for the call to renewal. Mrs Jones also read the second of a series of papers on motherhod. It was agreed that for the third and last of these services the Prebbleton branch should join Templeton and Hornby in a combined service to be held at Hornby in May. Jt was also decided to have a corporate communion service for members in conjunction with the usual morning scvice at All Saints' Church on April IS. The hostesses for afternoon tea were Mesdames Hunt and Gallagher.

DARFIELI) The Rev. Mr Moffatl presided at a meeting to discuss the funds and mission quota connected with St. Andrew's Anglican Church. Arrangements were made for a garden party to be held at the residence of Mr 11. A. Knight, Racecourse Hill, on April .14. Mr George Cridge was appointed secretary and treasurer. Several members offered the use of their cars for transporting the various workers. It was decided to ask Archbishop Julius to open the function. The following stall-holders were appointed:—Afternoon tea, Mesdames G. F. Hutton and 11. Fdbrooke: produce, Mesdames C. Jarmun and J. H. Jarman; tlower stall, Mrs Redfern: sweets. Misses IT. GLENTUNNEL A meeting of those who had assisted at the garden party recently held at "Homcbush" was held at Glentunnel, Mr James Deans presiding. A satisfactory credit balance was shown iu the financial statement, £5(5 proiit, having been realised, to be divided between the Presbyterian and Anglican Churches, Glentunnel. Mr and Mrs James Deans were thanked for the use of their grounds. The luncheon held at the recent Coalgate ewe fair proved a financial success. £IU 10s being realised. • Mrs T.
