■ ♦ i CANTERBURY WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL REACH pi) j A clay of surprises and indifferent j golf describes the play at Shirley yes- i lerday, when the match section of the j Canterbury women'.; golf championship was begun. In the bogey matches played c" ' -g the day, only five cards were returned in the senior division in Ihe morning and they consisted of I two cards of four down and three of seven down. The junior division returned b-'.'.er figures, for their competition was won by a card of two up from two other players with one up. The afternoon fourball bogey produced results mi a par with the morning scores, for the three leading cards were I up, all square, and .1 down. j Miss .11. Eoughnan was one of the! few to play up if) her handicap, and! she was perhaps fortunate in striking Miss W. Hams-Graham a little below I her best I'oini. The latter has not yctj reached her lop form at Shirley, but her prospects in the autumn foursomes, seem very good. In a round that was even all the wayMiss Eoughnan won on the seventeenth green and completed the course in less than CO. Another surprise win was that of Miss E. White-Parsons in her match against Miss M. Beadel. Miss WhiteParsons was uncertain in the early stages of the game but improved as • she progressed. Ai the t.wcllin she was j -k clown, bin won inc next live in a, row, and was ctormy one. The last tell to Miss -beactei. out with a win at ( the nineteenth, iviiss White-Parsons, look the matcn. : Miss V. Homing had a close game' with Mrs McKiUop. but when the I latter missed a snort pint at the; eleventh Miss Fleming went on stead- j ny, winning eventually by 4 and 3. , Miss J. Stevenson started disastrously : in her game with Miss K. Johnston j and after losing the first six holes i setlied down more comfortably and j managed to keep her opponent's lead j from gro-.-ing larger. j In the Shirley Cup in the morning Miss Rutherford did well to win her match against Mrs Butcher, as she had to concede several strokes. Sue failed, | however, to survive the afternoon ; round against Mrs Stickings. Afternoon Rounds Miss Johnston put up a good light ' against Miss Fleming in the afternoon, j Miss Hcming was slightly uncertain of: some of her shots yesterday, and it was j ! at the fourteenth where the game was ! square that a putting lapse might have I I cost her the match. The hole was i I halved in fives after Miss Fleming had ; i put her second on the green. ! Miss Johnston was unlucky to have i a partial stymie at the short fifteenth 1 and as she tailed to negotiate this she ' was one down with three to go. At j "The Pat'oda" Miss Fleming's drive was down the middle and Miss Johnston hooked hers behind the willows on the left. Her second hit. the trees but went through. From there a long brassie shot left her still short ot the green, and her approach pitched in the j bank and stopped. Miss Fleming fol- ! lowed the middle of the fairway to the I green, where she put. her fourth pin i high ' This putt she sank for a bogey i and was now dormy. The seventeenth I was halved in good fours after both ! wore on the green in two. The oilier semi-final, between Miss While-Parsons and Miss I.oughnan. was • disappointing as a contest. Miss I.oughJ nan's efforts to achieve extreme length led her into much trouble, while her : opponent played steady, safe, and very : effective golf. The match ended at the 1 thirteenth green. The final will be played this morning, commencing at 9.30. I The final of the Shirley Cup will I start 15 minutes zftcr the other match and will be contested by Miss Parsons ' nnd Mrs Stickings. Mrs G. Kingscote : will umpire this match, and Mr M. H. i Godby the championship. '■ The results of yesterday s play are:
