TUJKF GOSSIP The First Win Battle Qu.cn, winner of the Novice Stakes at Omoto yesterday, had her early education at Riccarton, but failed to do much good, and after a speil was leased a tew months back by her owner, Mr T. C. Robinson, of North Canterbury, to the Grcymouth ownertrainer, F. Escott. She owed her success to her early pace, as she was stopping over the last half furlong, and but for vigorous horsemanship would have succumbed to Arctic Star's belated finishing run. But for being the slowest to move off, the latter would have been returned the winner. On Sick List Proscenium was galloped on at Hokiti"ka, and his stable-mate Maroha suffered similar trouble at Omoto yesterday, and both may be missing to-day. Well Received

Quietly recorded two popular wins for her new owner. Mr H. L. Bowker, at Greymouth yesterday. She was very well treated in her first engagement amongst a very weak lot, and cantered home in front, while extra weight given her in the second race failed to stop her. She is an improving three-year-old filly, and will win some good races for Mr Bowker, who is a consistent supporter of racing. .Leading Horsemen As a result of his four successes at Greymouth yesterday, L. J. Ellis is now three in front of K. Voitre for the jockey premiership, and he should increase his totai to-day. Voitre will be riding at Avondalc to-day. Chance Spoilt Royal Sceptre was one of the victims of a" crowd which took place at. the bend into the back stretch in the Flying Handicap at, Omoto yesVerday. and was a long way from the leading division when the straight was reached. He then put in a solid run, and only just missed a place. He will fare better to-day if he escapes early trouble. He now races in the colours of Mr H. Archer, of Eangiora. Rush Tactics Tea Garden, more patiently handled, would have b?aten Lady Rene at Omoto yesterday. He was rushed to the front after a furlong had been covered, and was not given much respite for the remainder of the journey. He has not ha-'I a chance to become seasoned since he recently resumed work, and. it seemed unwise to adopt such tactics with him in the circumstances. Poor Proposition Juniper has not done well since he left Riccarton for the West Coast in the charge of W. McDonald, and in addition to being a bad traveller his wind trouble has seriously affected him. He ran a fair race yesterday without even being dangerous, but on that form he does not look likely to win a race on the trip. Veteran Reappears Booster, who has been retired several times, made another reappearance at Omoto yesterday, looking well but apparently short of fast work. He nevertheless ran a good race for five furlongs, and will be more in evidence again at Reefton. FIRE IN STABLES THREE YEARLINGS BURNED TO DEATH (CMTED PRKSS ASSOCIATION'-BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COP YRICinT.) SYDNEY, April 6. Fire this morning destroyed the wooden stables at the sale ring of H. Chisholm, Randwick. Three yearlings sold yesterday were burned Jo Seath. A house alongside, occupied by TV. Sweeney, was gutted. Another part oj Chisholm's stables, occupied by Fred Williams's horses, including Chatham, was undamaged, and a third section, containing George Price's charges, was also untouched, the wind being in the right direction. The horses, however, were removed for safety. Golden Wings was also in Williams's stables, which were undamaged. The sale ring was completely dc» stroyed. It was insured for £4900. The yearlings which perished wei* a brown filly by Grosvenor, whicn brought, 70 guineas, a black colt biy Rosewing, which brought 140 guineqjs. and a chestnut gelding by Diacqucnod, which brought 65 guineas. George Price's stables contained KUvcra. Sir John Whittingham, Rancharo, Blixten, Gladswood, and severe! others, which took part in the autun n meeting. Chatham was quartered n a box on the east side of the stabh s, and was in no immediate danger, is the wind was in the opposite dire :- tion. H. Chisholm lost his polo cqul] iment. harness, and other gear, valued at £2OO. ; The fire is believed to have started from a cigar butt igniting the coir matting in the arena. TROTTING NOTES Reminders Nominations for the Kaikoura Trolling Club's annual meeting close on Monday at 9 p.m. Owners arc reminded that the Kaikoura telegraph office closes at 5 p.m. Acceptances for the Ashburlon meeting to be held on Saturday next will close on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Walla Walla Walla Walla is in first-class order just now, and ready to run the race of his life, and his owner. Mr L. S. Martin, does not consider it advisable to set him against a record when he has engagements on hand. In Wednesday's race he struck himself on the fetlock joint, but he did no real damage, and is as fit as ever he was. He will do useful work at Addington tomorrow, but on Tuesday, if conditions are favourable, he will be given a stirring workout to wind him up properly for his Ashburton engagements. As showing the interest that is being taken in Walla Walla's racing in New Zealand, his owner. Mr L. S. Martin, vesterday received from Perth a cable message: "Regret learn Walla Walla's mishap. Hope not serious." Mr Martin has replied that Walla Walla is not injured, and that his next appearance is being awaited with confidence. Driver's Disappointment W. McKay, who drove Walla Walla in his engagements on Saturday, is very disappointed with the result of the race, but, like a good sportsman, he blames himself as much as anyone else for the. position that the Australian horse got into. Had he been able to get clear over the last half-mile McKay is still satisfied that lie would have made a race of it, and the 29 3-5 sec Harold Logan registered over the last quarter would have been improved upon. The Australian driver makes no excuses, but he is .satisfied that Walla Walla is still the great horse he always thought lie was. McKay, who is as good a driver as we have had in New Zealand, says he would have helped to make the pace had he been able to do it. The way in which the race was run and the position he got into prevented him from racing his horse. He attaches n blame to anyone. The luck of the running was against him. Auburn Lad The Australian pacer Auburn T.a.l has come through his racing at Addington without material harm, and his appearance at Ashburton will be eagerly looked forward to. A fine bold pacer, the grass track will not prevent any great difficulties, and he may be expected to race all the way with horses he is set to meet. As both Auburn Lad and Walla Walla will be engaged on this occasion, the owner. L. S. Martin, will drive Walla Walla, and McKav will drive his own horse, Aubutn Lad. Silver de Oro Silver cie Oro's running in the President's Handicap on Wednesday suggested a mile ana a half race amongst the champions as well within her compass, and there are many who considered- she should have been placed third, if not second, in the President's Handicap on Wednesday. After having a race run to sun. her she apparently failed to put in that dash at the finish that should have landed her a winner. She is engaged in the Durbar Handicap at Ashburton. and may prove a hard proposition for those opposed to her. Unhoppled Trotters First Wrack is one of the most genuine trotters in commission, and it := hard to remember when she finished out of a place. She is engaged in the Stewards' Handicap t Ashburton, and in this race for the best class unhoppled trotters s e must take a power of beating. Her stable-mate. Wrackler. showed at Addington that he is back to his best form, and on the Asliburtori track lie will be prominent from the start. The Durbar Lodge stables can always be depended upon to produce true and tried performers at Ashburton. and in this race First Wrack and Wracklcr provide a reliable pan' On a Grass Track Walla Walla will mane publicappearance on a grass track for the first time in New Zealand when he steps out in the Durbar Lodge Handicap at Ashburton. He is not altogether a stranger to grass tracks, for he holds a record of 3min ltisec on the Goulbourn course when he won the Goulbouin Cup. He registered this time from 132 yards behind. This was not altogether the ideal going for a pacer, but Walla Walla came the last half mile in lmin lscc. This is considered a good enough performance to justify his owner in starting the champion on a grass track at Ashburton.

Keeping to Time-Table One of the many pleasing features of the recent meeting at Acidington was the punctuality observed in the closing of the totalisator and the running of the races, and the Metropolitan Club set an example when the last race of a two days' programme was started within one minute of the time set out on the race card. This proved that there is no need for the continued delays that often make a day's racing a rather tiresome affair ana? in no way assists to entertain the very many trotting patrons. The totalisator proprietor has shown that big sums of money can be handled with the utmost dispatch and the machine can be balanced in the time allowed. Often the delays between races are not the fault of those i:: charge of the totalisator, but extra time is often allowed under the directions of the committee of the club. It is not difficult to educate the racing public. The Metropolitan Trotting Club started the meeting well by closing the machine on the first race at advertised time and though a few dilatory speculators may have been led without a wager, they learned' a lesson and were not behind time in doing thenbusiness later. Very little money was shut out of the machine on any race, and in the invitation matches the totalisator windows were deserted some time before the race started. Allowing extra time for a few persons who could not make up their minds is a bad policy, arid creates a genera! slackness that detracts from the thorough enjoyment of the spot. SYDNEY YEARLING SALES COLTS BY HEROIC VOli 1100 (JL'INEAS (■[.•NiTUn ASSIK IATIOX-- BY KLECTniC T ELKO EAPn —COPY ILIOHT.) (Received April 6, 10.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 6. HANNAN MEMORIAL WONJ BY GIGGLESWICK HAI'LBOWLINE'S SUCCESS (siT'.'i.u. to tup: piu:ss.) GREYMOUTH, April 6. The Grcymouth Jockey Club's autumn meeting was opened at Omoto to-day in fine weather, and on a fast track. There was a large attendance for an off day, but principally owing to some large dividends, the totalisator turnover showed a slight decrease. A sum of £4053 was handled, against £4542 on the corresponding day last year. Results:— NOVICE STAKES.
