No information is forthcoming, however, as to the amount of the grant. Farmers' Union The Uvcntv-fii'th annua! meeting of the Timaru-St. Andrew* branch of the Now Zealand Farmer.-' Union was hcla vesterday, Mr A. Ward presiding. " The annual report stated that conditions for the farming community had considerably improved. \\ 00l had ai la<t reached its productive value ana Urn-ib was also holding its own. inc. price of sheen, both for breeding and .'.tores, had been steadily on the increase The one difficulty was the position of the dairy farmer, and until adjustment was made m the ease 01 farm mortgages there would be no improvement. Wheat was low m price and, as there was a surplus, a protest should be made against imports, ihe financial position of the farmer had been helped by the raising ot the exchange rate. The committee had appealed to faimers to take as much advantage as possible of the Government schemes 101 giving men employment. The shearin" class had again been conducted srceess'fullv, although a shortage ol sheep had made tne position chfncuu Members were still unanimously agreed that small birds weir a pest and should be kept in check. The committee; had done all it could to keep farmers on their holdings. It was not satisfied with the present system ot grading and had endeavoured to bring abom a change. So far nothing had been achieved, but the matter was still under consideration. It was anticipated that once the financial position was back to normal there would be a substantial increase in the membership. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £42 His Hd.

Waimataitai Bath Complaint was made a! a mectine, of the Waimataitai Ex-Pupils' Association by Mr C. E. Kassall that the jubilee bath committee had not exercised Hie lull powers siven !o it. and had not functioned as intended. Mr Hawaii s remarks were made durinu a discussion of a propo.-al to carry out a canvass for funds to compiek- the bath. The secretary 'Mr G. Williams', in ,->ns\ver to a question, read a statement, of accounts present'd by Hie bath committee, showine, that the receipts amounting to il~>W had been spent, with the exception of CSO. and that a fortnight ago the committee had just sutneient money available to complete the concreting of the bath. The fencinp. seating, and shed accommodation of the bath was estimated to cost £4OO, and this sum would still have to be raised. After some discussion, Mr Hassan raid that the general impression was that the control of the bath project had been entrusted by the three or-1 ganisations originally concerned to the bath committee to carry to completion. Mr Williams said that the bath comn, iil.ee reali'ed that the borough cotm-

oil had decided to advance the remainder of the money required on loan for a term of one year . Efforts would ; have to be made immediately to lind j the motley to repay the loan and he : was confident that the committee was i now moving in this riireeiion. In view ; of the fact that a canvass of former ' pupils of th.e school would duplicate tiie appeal ol' the bath committee, the-' ns-ncklion deeded not to proceed' with this pmpo.-al. i.'tit *o canvas;: former pupils living out-ade the schook district and those living outside Timaru. it wa- decided to ask decade secretaries t . draw up li.-ts. of possible lo'.itribtitor:. IMPROVEMENT OF RK.TAKTON . AVENUE

The progress made with the recou- | struction of Riccarton avenue, Cr. J. W. Beanland. chairman of the works committee of the Christchurch City Council, said yesterday, has gone on well, and has, in fact, exceeded ex-

pectations. The estimate he made some time ago. that it would take two months to complete the work, would not be exceeded by more than a week or a fortnight, and given good weather the middle of next month ought to sec the job finished. At present the channelling and draining almost have been completed, and the covering of the Post and Telegraph Department's ducts will be finished in a fortnight. On the south side of the avenue metal has been spread for

, about one-third of the distance, and the whole of the south side should be done in a fortnight. Provided fine weather is experienced this month the tar-sealing of one side of the roadway should be fhrshed by the end' of the month. At present between 30 ana 35 men are at work on the avenue. I
