OXFORD EWE FAIR

GOOD QUALITY YARDING KEEN DEMAND FOR OLDER SHEEP The Oxford ewe fair, which was held yesterday, was a most successful sale, and in point of quality was better than Oxford fairs for some years. For this fair supplies are drawn largely from the back country, and the season has obviously suited the sheep there. They came to the yard looking their best. The entrv of 25.000 compared with 20,000 last "year and 17,000 the year before, and was made up of big station drafts and the usual large number of small farmers' lines. The older sheep sold very well, fully up to the earlier fairs, and there were odd instances of old ewes bought at the northern sales being turned over at a profit of a shilling or two. The demand for twotooths at Oxford is always limited, mainly because the bulk of the buying strength comes from farmers who want a one-year ewe that will give them a good lamb and fatten easily, and for this class there was a restricted demand yesterday at prices which were rather below late rates. The entry of two-tooths was small. There was a very noticeable improvement in the quality of the sheep offered oil' the Lees Valley runs, and they sold well. Most of the bigger stations that are usually represented sent in their annual drafts, and there was a big penning of lambs, few of them of outstanding quality. Bidding was very slow at the start, but speeded up later, and for serviceable older sheep was steady all day. Two-tooths were by no means neglected, but the restricted capacity of the district for absorbing sheep of this age was reflected in the bidding, and mo:v who were needing young sheep were able to get them more '.'hcaply than they would have at most oilier fairs. The bidding was keen at all times for older sheep from the runs, which have the reputation of doing well on lower country.

The Top Price Top price for the fair was 33?, this figure, being made for a line of 71 from Mrs M. J. Jackman, who for many years has sent a draft of twotooth Corricdales from Domett to Oxford. The same price was made by a line of 70 Corricdales from L. H. Leslie (.Bennetts). Both were excellent drafts. The best price for halfbreds was 31s, which was secured for the first cut from a draft sold on behalf of Parish Bros. (Oxford), who topped the fair last year with 16s 9d. A line of 72 two-tooth Corriedales from L. Doak (Horrelvillc) made 31s 6d, ana lines from J. W. Elisor's Garrymere flock and R. W. Elisor's Bullock Creek Hock made 30s 9d and 30s 3d. On account of A. E. Cloeve (View Hill), a pen of 80 was sold at 30s. The best price for four-year sheep was 24s 3d. which was paid for the first cut from a line of 301 sold on account of J. A. Brown (Whiterock Downs). Top price in this section last year was 9s 6d. On account of J. Pickering <Cust), a line of four-year halfbreds made 23s 6d, and J. \V.
