OBITUARY

MR ROBERT FRASER Mr Robert Frascr, one of the oldest and best-known figures in the Mackenzie district, died at .Chamberlain, Albury, on Saturday. Mr Fraser, who was 78 years of age. was the second son of Mr Hugh Fraser, an early Mackenzie country settler? the original holder of the Ben Ohau and Black Forest stations. Later the family went to Timaru and lived at "Blairberg," Olipua road. Mr Robert Frascr was a ( former scholar at the first public school in Timaru, situated on the site | of the drill hall, and he was a founda- , tion pupil of the Timaru Main School. He spent many years in the Mackenzie country and inter took up land j at Opawa Downs, near Albury, which ; lie farmed successfully for several 1 years. His family. Misses Kathleen and Maureen Fraser and Messrs Robert, Edmund, and Maurice Fraser live in the district. Mr Fraser was a lover of the collie, and for many years his dogs were noted throughout the Dominion for their performances at trials. He was a keen supporter of the Albury collie dog trial. Of a retiring disposition. Mr Frascr was not actively engaged in public affairs, but took his part in the development of the district.

Moreover, he declared that an unwritten agreement was made by Roberts and Kitchener v.hh the Boer leaders before the peace treaty was signed that he and other British subjects who fought on the Boer side should no free.
