FIRES

HOUSE DESTKOYED AT NEW BRIGHTON Fire, which broke out at 10.45 last night, completely destroyed a threeroomed wooden house at 007 Estuary road, New Brighton. The house was owned by Mrs A. Hams of 124 Somertield street, and occupied by Mr A Griffiths, a relief worker. Mr Griffiths was forced to make a hurried escape in his night attire, and saved nothing. The ii re. which started m the kitchen beside the fireplace, was attended bv the New Brighton Fire Brigade. There was no water available anvwhere near the house, and the brigade could do nothing beyond keeping the lire from spreading jnto some thick scrub nearby. It could not be ascertained last night if the house; was insured, but there was no insurance on the furniture.

The licensee, Mr J. O'Grady, .and his wife, the only occupants, had lo make a nasty exit by the lire escape. The property, owned by the estate of Winnie Redwood, deceased, was insured for £425, and the licensee had £75 insurance on the furniture and stock, both insurances being in the Victoria Office, but a heavy loss will be suffered by both owner and occupier. An outbreak of fire at Hokitika yesterday morning, about 10 o'clock, destroyed the control room of the Wcstland Timber and Bos. Company's diving kiln near the wharf. Damage amounting to between £2OO and £3OO was done to new machines. The factory will be idle for some time. Eighteen hands are employed. The timely arrival of the lire brigade prevented a much larger fire, as there was a considerable quantity of white pine timber stored. Another fire at Hokitika totally destroyed a four-roomed unoccupied dwelling owned by Mrs ,1. Cameron.
