LIGHTING OF THE SQUARE

IMPROVEMENTS COMPLETED That the wishes of the Chrislchurch City Council in lighting Cathedral square have been carried out already was the assertion made in a report to the meeting of the council last night from the electricity committee. Al the previous meeting the lighting of the square was referred to the committee for consideration, but the report last night claimed that such resolution must have been carried because of misunderstanding of the facts. The committee's explanation was accented. Discussing the history of the improvement to the lighting of Cathedral square the report of the committee stated that a sub-eommitlre had met in the square three Limes to dis-

cuss proposals. That was before July, 1P33, during which month a sub-com-mittee was r.cain appointed to consider square lighting. Report of Investigation The report of that committee, summarised, was as follows: —(a) Lighting fixtures in the plot would be in conflict with the architectural design by dry. without a compensating value by night: (b) flood-lighting would not be suitable or effective either in the means of applying it or in its result.-: ic> the lighting of the square as a whole is reasonable and cll'eciivc, and not out of 'keeping with the intrinsic character which the city's development has given to the square: (di to provide from existing poles both the lighting fur the plot and added lighting for the square, simultaneously achieves 'all the- requirements. 11 leaves unimpaired the dignity of the design, it utilises undesirable but unavoidable poles, it adequately illuminates the. plot, and provides increased lighting outside of the plot. Following that report proposals were ae'epted which resulted in increased lighting in the central portion with seven now lamps—approximately a :'.'> per cent, increase in the total square lighting—and one tramway pole had been removed. The v.hole was apTiroved bv all int< rested sections of the council, and bv the local branch of the Institute of Architects. The electricity committee added •he statement that it was roividorf.j that the wi-hos <»f 'he evurc.i had bcT: cr-rrit-ii nut. The report v.as adopted.
