CARTER THE GREAT
REASON AT THE RADI.VST HALL Harry Houdini, the late anti-spirit-ist and Carter the Great, who with his company is to appear at the Radiant Hall for a short season only, beginning at the matinee on Saturday next, were friends of long standing, and bcth sincere investigators of the occult. For more than 30 years their pathways converged and in all parts of the world each pursued faithfully anv clue tending to an exposition of mysteries which savoured of the supernatural or preternatural. After diligent research these two friends met in Houdini's home, and compared notes. The result was the same. Carter sat long into the night with Houdini, and their conversation was earnest and studious; at this, their last meeting, both bade one another good-bye after agreeing that, if they were not vouchsafed another conference on earth, which ever one or the other who died first was to return, if possible, to this world in spirit form and if a definite materialisation of the form was not within his power : then some sign or tap or knock was to be made as a sign or signal tlaat a [successful return to terrestrial bounds was accomplished. After Houdini's death I Carter watched and listened for days ] for a "sig n f rom fellow magician Nothing occurred for a long time until one night in Carter's seance, where bells ring and knocks are heard, and after the seance was completed just before the demolition of the spirit cabinet, the agreed signal of four distinct taps was heard. Carter stood aghast; he could not believe his rare He paused in his show and waitednothing more was heard that night. Carter thought it was an accident until the following night the same sharp, ! definite four taps were heard and have since been heard each night after seance. Carter has since'tapped back C. but receives nothing more; he feels that this may be due to the fact that only be knew the Morse code. acquainting Houdini with the sign of the letter H only.
