CHRISTCHURCH ( LIB QUALIFYING HOUNDS FOR BORTHWICK VASE A general deterioration in the scores returned was a feature of the second qualifying round of the Borthwick Vase, which was played at Shirley on Saturday. Once again it was on the putting greens that many promising scores were marred, as the greens were by no means true. The best gross scores returned were the rounds of A. R. Blank and R. T. Tosswill, who needed 73 each to complete the course from the handicaps of 1 and 2 respectively. It was left for a junior in L. A. Woodward, whose handicap is 14. to return the best net score of 69. Two other junior scores are worth noting—those of M. J. Russell and C. Ogilvie, who handed in scores of TO net from the 13 and 17 marks. When considering the scores at Shirley since the watering scheme lias been installed it must be realised that the conditions are almost those of Winter and the straight driver is the one to suffer from loss of length. The general improvement in the lies obtained between tee and green more than compensates for any loss in distance. A total of 146 was necessary to enter the rin3l eight, and those who qualified were:— S.N. B. Wynne .. ..142 M. W, Simes .. ..143 H. J. Gosset .. ..145 E. J. Pumphrey .. 145 S. L. Rutherford .. 146 N. E. Tingey .. -.146 G.N.Francis ..146 G. W. Ward . . 146 ; The draw for the first round, winch will be plaved on April 14. is:-Wynne v.Ward, Pumphrey v. Rutherford.; Gosset v.
