DEMONSTRATION BY LOKD RITIIEKFOUD LONDON, .March 2a\ A crowded audier.ee saw Lord j Rutherford splitting atoms in the ■ theatre at the Royal Institution, thus publicly committing the "crime"' for which mediaeval alchemists were burned at the stake for attempting the transmutation of elements. An apparatus of 100,000 volts was used by Lord Rutherford and his assistants to disintegrate atoms at the rate of 1000 a minute, while a system of wireless amplification enabled Hie audience to hear the shells "bombarding,* the atoms.
