S.M.. in the Magistrate's Court to-day to a charge of carrying on business as a gold coin dealer without n permit James Forbc.-. an employee of Morris. pleaded not guilty to a charge of aiding and abetting the offence. Morris pleaded guilty to a charge oi . melting down two sovereigns without , the consent of the Minister far \ Finance. ! Mr C. Evans Scott, who pro.-rented. | said the evidence would siiow thai Morris had been carrying on the bust- 1 ness of a gold coin dealer in that he ! was purchasing go'd coins, and that ! his servant, Forbes, was aiding and i abetting hlr.i in the same offence. 1 Morris manufactured articles of . jewellerv, and in addition it would be proved in evidence that he had admitted that he exported quantities oi melted-down gold. The evidence would establish that on November 19. 1933, and on several subsequent dates, Morris and Forbes purchased eight sovereigns and two half-sover-eigns from two police constables. _ The first four sales were made at 30s a ; sovereign, and the last two at .29s It was contended by Mr .1. B. \alciwvn, who represented defendants, that Morris was not a dealer in gold com within the meaning of the regulations. and second that the Gold Com ■ Regulations. 1932. were ultra vires. , He contended that the Governor-General-in-Council had not. the power under the Board of Trade Regu:atio:is. 1919. to make the 1932 regulations. Decision was reserved.
