RATIONING OF TEACHERS
w LOW WAGES CRITICISED BOARD TO ASK FOR INCRKASKD ALLOW ANCKS i The low wages which were being ■ paid to some teachers employed under the ration scheme, particularly in iso- . lated schools on the West Coast, were criticised at the meeting of the Canterbury Education Board yesterday. Mr S. R. Evison said that it had ; been decided to ask for an increase ; m the board allowances paid to : rationed teachers in Grade O schools ; from £24 to £36. The decision had | been due mainly to the special circumstances which had been noticed to; exist in some of the West Coast schools, he saii. There were teachers; in isolated and remote districts who 1 were placed in a position of undue ; hardship by the operation of t.ie rationed payment system. In such • cases the boarding allowances were considered to be inadequate. There I were schools where reductions in ! salaries had been severe. j It was also recommended that the : department should review the payment of marriage allowances to married rationed teachers. Considered Absurd Tiie chairman 'Mr W. P. Spencer), commenting on the low scale of sala- I ries paid to some teachers, said that ; in his opinion a salary of £GO a year was absurd. "hi the case of rationed teachers'.'" a member asked. Mr Spencer: In all cases. Mr R. Wild: You have to remember that it is a dole payment. "The leasl tiiev should be paid is CCO a year, with boa'ding allowances," said Mr Spencer. The recommendations, which were embodied in a report to the board, were approved. The board passed a resolution ex- ■ pressing appreciation of a report on rationed teachers, which was drawn up for the use of head teachers by the senior inspector <Mr A. McNeill. It was stated that the report had received the commendation of the department.
