OBITUARY
♦ MR JOHN WILLIAM WIN The death of Mr John William Win, Wakefield, Nelson, has removed a well-known personality who was connected with the earliest Dovedale settlers. Mr Win was born at Ranzau (Nelson) on April 25, 1853, and was thus in his eighty-first year. At the early age of 10 years Mr Win was associated with his father, Mr John Win, in breaking in virgin bush country in the Dovedale valley. Many were the tales of hardship and the efforts to overcome them that could be related by this hard-working pioneer. In those days of meagre education facilities, Mr Win took every opportunity to learn to read and yrite, principally night school, with such good effect that he has been able to give permanent records of the early history of Dovedale, besides discussing through the medium of the press everyday topics. Mr Win, or "J.W.," as he was familiarly known by his many friends, was for 34 years secretary to the Dovedale Road Board, and for more than 40 years a teacher in the Dovedale Methodist Sunday school.
