| ACCIDENT W ITH BENZINE i ... > ATI\ liS CKITK'ISKI) HV (OUONEK ' iP»ES3 *S3LiCIAT!O* I r._ S.G r.l X.) WAIROA. March 10. In giving a verdict that Mrs Lucy i Hohcpa died from burns caused j through a bottle of benzine being spilled over her, and then ignited iby a nearby candle, Mr Winter | (District Coroner) criticised the . natives for their neglect and callousi ness m not securing the services of {the district nurse to attend Mrs i Hohcpa, and in not allowing the ! nurse to take her to hospital. When I permission was granted several days had elapsed, and by that time the condition of Mrs Ilohepa. who was the wife of a Maori living on the Mahia Peninsula, was very grave. ! She died from her injuries shortly after admission to hospital. i The coroner also told the natives that if Mrs Ilohepa had died while ! in their care lie would have asked 1 the authorities to bring a charge of manslaughter against them. This was ; the second time that a similar case , had occurred in a short period, and I should another occur he would ask I the authorities to act immediately. J : —r
