Sir Kmssiey Wood. British Post-ina.-tcr-Gcncral, when on a recent visit to Sweden, found telephone services available to subscribers there that are not in use in other countries. There Mas the "name-call" sy.-tem by which co tam subscribers could be called by name instead of the usual number. Swedish business houses considered it an advantage for customers to ring without looking up a telephone directory, and looked upon, it as a good advirtiscmcnt. Subscribers had to pay a specially high fee for this privilege. Then there was an elaborate system of calling taxis, with a special central exchange transmitting orders by telephone. An information bureau scheme gave service to subscribers in manv ways. For example, a doctor leaving for a holiday would leave certain information with the bureau, such ashia holiday address, the date of his return, the telephone number of his locum* tenenx and so on.
