RABBITS NEAR ROTHERHAM
TO TIIE EDITOR OT THE IKES>. Sir,—As one who pays a tax for tlu:; destruction of rabbits I desire to c-x-. press my opinion on this matter. Al- i though we have two inspectors, one! at Rotherham and one at Culverden, j the rabbits are permitted to increase! at an alarming extent. I know pro- 1 perties close to the main road where, they have not been troubled since the; skins were at a high price last year j and they can now be seen in hun- ; areas, waiting for prices to rife. A few 1 years ago it was compulsory fori landowners to employ rnbbiters to! keep the pest within bounds, but now . things have changed and we have! Rafferty's rules. I maintain that rab- ; bits must be kept in check; but what ; is the use of some of us doing our ! best while others adjoining let them j increase during the sprinp and sun:-, mer months and only make a clear- . anco when the skins and prices are! good? If this is not rabbit farming, i what is? I can get old identities to; endorse all I say, and this has been 1 allowed to go on for some time. Last j vear, when skins rose to a big price, | some landowners got up to 700 rab-. bits a day after poisoning. Along; our gorse " fences and riverbeds. at j present, rabbits abound. Some of the ; members of the Rabbit Board should | make a trip round our riverbeds and ; see for themselves. —Yours, etc., TAXPAYER. Rotherham. March 13, 1934.
