MOTORING
♦ MEETING OF CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION A meeting of the general council of the Canterbury Automobile Association was held last evening, Mr .R. Twyneham presiding. The road service committee reported that five new service stations had been appointed. The appointment of a metropolitan service station was fully discussed and it was decided that the appointment be deferred until all appointments of suburban stations had been made, and hours -and means of communication were fully known. The road and patrol report for February stated that 1113 miles were travelled by the patrol, 24 new members were secured, nine cars were assisted, and 12 signs were erected. The patrol attended at trotting meetings at Addington, Riccarton, and New Brighton. Road service repairs during February included 56 jobs: 18 new members were secured, mostly at Ashburton. For the two months 101. jobs were undertaken. New Members A list of 104 new members was approved, and it was stated that the big increase in membership was mainly attributable to the association's new road service. The total to date for the year was 501. Mr F. W. Freeman was thanked for nis report on the conference of the South Island Motor Union at Nelson. A letter was received from a Dunedin motorist congratulating the association on the camping facilities provided at the Addington show grounds. Reliability Trial Reporting on the recent reliability trial run to Hanmer, the sports committee stated that part of the course chosen for private owner and members of the trade proved to be a very severe test for drivers. A number of drivers lost marks owing to difficulty in successfully negotiating some of the corners. Some of the petrol consumptions were outstanding and went to showhow economical were some of the present-day carburettors. It was very pleasing that so many women members took part in the trial. The old car section of the trial was quite a success and went to demonstrate that a car, in spite of its age, was still capable of putting up a non-stop run to Hanmer with quite a good petrol consumption. The arrangements throughout the trial were good. Thanks were due to Mr W. Mockett for the selection of the course and for the valuable assistance given by him in arranging for the flagging of the course and opening and shutting of the gates on the road between Ethelton arid Kaiwara on the day of the trial. Mr J. Berry gave considerable help in assisting with filling petrol into cars at Hanmer and thanks are due to him. A special vote of thanks was passed to Mr L. B. Young. The splendid services of all others who assisted in the trial were commented on.
