SKETCH CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual general meeting and first exhibition for 1934 of Hie Canterbury College School of Art Sketch Club were held on Saturday evening. Opening the meeting, Mr C. O'Malley, tho retiring president, said that a suggestion had been received that an exhibition of students' work be held in the city during the year, in order to encourage the sale of members' pieHires. Young members were advised to avail themselves of such opportunities for criticism as the club aflorded, and send in as much work as possible lo exhibitions. Tho annual report showed that the membership had increased to 82, and that th?vc was an increasing interest in the activities of the club. Social functions had been particularly successful, one dance showing, a profit of a: HI.

The club wished to thank the following for their much appreciated criticisms:—Misses M. O. Stoddart and I. Copeland. and Messrs J. A. Johnstone, F. A. Shurrock, A. Cook, V. Ileen, and Svdney L. Thompson. Messrs K. Wallwork, F. A. Shurrock, and J. W. Gibb were thanked for the prizes they had given, and Mr J, Strachan for his assistance during the J ear. A satisfactory credit balance of £32 12s -Id was shown for 1933. Officers for lfl-U The following oflicers were elected in place of those who retired bv rotation:—President, Mr L. G. McCulJoLigh; vice-president, Mr C. O'Malley; .secretary. Miss Eileen Rose; treasurer, Miss Joan Mahar; committee. Misses Florence Akins and Enga Washbourn, Messrs M. Butterick and W. J. Oakley. Those holding office for another year were Misses Freda Acton and Florence Macdonald, and Mr W. Reed (committee members). Miss Olivia Spencer-Bower acted as critic in the sketch competition, in which Miss K. Dixon was placed first. It would be advisable, she said, for students to attempt larger compositions, in which the very much greater difficulties would teach valuable lessons. Students would have to learn to think before starting on a picture. A competition for a cover design was adjudicated h«y Mr L. G. McCillougii. the prize being awarded to Mr M. Ritchie.
