CRICKET

♦ i FINAL ROUND OLD BOYS' GOOD TOTAL , ANOTHER CENTURY TO HADLEE Cricketers seemtd lucky -to have any play oa Saturday, when the final round of the Canterbury Cricket As- . sociation's. championship was com- : menced. Heavy rain in the early I morning made the grounds slow, and ; throughout the afternoon rain threat- ;' ened, with an occasional light drizzle. ; To this was added a cofd easterly I wind, and it was more football than i cricket weather. | The play was not very exhilarating, j the main feature being the good score ] put up by Old Boys against West [ Christchurch. It was the highest total ' msde against the competition leaders this season. West may find it hard to pass the total set, but the team is prac- | tically assured of the championship in any case. On the adjoining wicket at Hagley Park—No. 2—St. Albans made a very poor showing against Riccar- i ton, and seems likely to lose the pc:-i- ! tion of runner-up. At Rugby Park ; Old Collegians played into a" strong position against Lancaster Park, whilst at Lancaster Park Sydenham took a | long time to Store 164 against Easti Christchurch. j WEST CHEISTCHtTRCII v. DKMPSTER'S FAVOURABLE VIEW A favuurjble opinion of league : cricket in Lancashire is expressed by j C. S. Dempster, the Wellington! and New Zealand Representative, in | a letter written from England to the cricket writer of the "Evening Post," Wellington. Dempster, who has played in the Ribblesdale League, is so much taken with the League arrangement that he recommends it as beins worth a trial in New Zealand. "Cricket matches in this league," j he writes, "are purely Saturday afternoon alTairs. There are many drawn name.-:: .some of them come about through the closure of an innings beinß applied too late, possibly for safety. But in this league cricket there is the snirit of the same, Play generally goes along at a fast clip, and with risky declaratians interest is held from start to finish. If this type of Saturday afternoon cricket were introduced in Wellington, say, after the first round of the championship matches, I am sure the public would respond to such exciting entertainment. No Tea Interval , "The games are billed to start at 12.30 p.m.. and if one side or the other is not out to time the minutes lost are added at the call of the allotted time 7.;KI p.m. There is no tea interval. hut 15 minutes are allowed between inn inns. Can you imagine from this how the public love these encounters? , And no wonder, from what I have seen, (lint county cricket suffers! - ' Dempster became associated with Blackpool as an amateur, and played in the Ribblesdale League, which has : no connexion with the Lancashire ! League, though one of numerous! leagues in that part of England. He adds that he is still interested in the coaching side of the game, and also states that he would very much like to come back for tho next season in New Zealand.
