—+ RUGBY FOOTBALL The report to be presented at the Sumner Rugby Football Club's annual meeting next Tuesday, states that during the last season the club was represented by two teams in the Canterbury Rugby Union's competitions. Both teams met with considerable success, and their creditable performances were in keeping with the efforts of the Sumner Club teams of the past. The fourth grade team finished third in the competition, after playing consistently well throughout the season. The under 16 team also finished a close third in its competition, in spite of very strong opposition. The annual dance was held at Sumner. This event has become an important social function of the club and although not a success financially, the dance itself was thoroughly enjoyed. Athletics Many congratulations have been extended to H. McCaskcy, who performed so creditably for Canterbury in the recent interprovincial meeting against Otago. D. W. Bishop is steadily improving after his operation. The annual inter-borough athletic contest against New Brighton Club will be held at St. Leonard's square next Saturday. The contest will be on the lines of those of previous years. The Sumner team will be selected next week. Association Football The Sumner Association Football Club will open its season this afternoon at St. Leonard's square, when friendly games will be played. Life Saving The Sumner Club concluded a successful season last Sunday. The competitions were held in miserable weather. The Taylor's Mistake Club intended competing for the club's only club event on that day also, for the Archbold Cup. This is a four-man competition, and will now be held tomorrow at 2.30 p.m. Members are asked to be over at the bay by 11 a.m. in order to facilitate the draw. Tennis hi the final of the men's singles championship of the Sumner Club R. Huston defeated A. E. Hewstone, 2-fi, 6-2, 6-4. after a match in which the tennis was of quite good standard. In the women's handicap doubles Misses E. Turnbull and P. MeCombs (minus 15 3-6). defeated Mesdames Webb and Dawe (minus 3-6 15». 9-11. 6-4, 6-2. In the combined doubles Miss Comerford and Hutchinson defeated Miss Chambers and Huston by default. Old Scholars' Association The annual report o l ' the Sumner District High Scnool Old Scholars' Association, which will be presented at the annual meeting next Thursday, states that generous support has been received during the year from the members, and the committee has been able to give a cup for competition among the senior boys of the high school. This cud will be presented to the school on the night of the annual meeting. The committee has also arranged a tennis afternoon at the High School. The committee has issued a "Who's Where," which contains news regarding the births, marriages, and engagements of the old pupils, and olher interesting matter about the teachers and scholars of the oast. Good Templars A grand concert organised by the Sumner Pride Lodge of Good Juvenile Templars was held in Die Sumner Town Hall on Thursday evening. There wrs a large attendance and tln> programme was well received. During the evening a short address was given bv the Mayoress of Sumner, Mrs W. H. Nicholson." Before the end of the concert Mr H. C. Ford, on behalf of the Juvenile Temple, asked for a vote of thanks to all the artists. The accompanist was presented with a bouquet.
