YESTERDAY'S CLOTHES

Costume and Fashion in the XlXth Onturv. By Herbert Norris. Vol. J VI of Mr Norris's series. .T. M. Dent and Sons Ltd. (25s net). Mr Norris's series should be useful to students of history, artists and stage managers. It has also an interest for all those who like to look back into the past. This volume, dealing with the nineteenth century, is published in advance of vols. 111., IV., and V. The letterpress is excellent both in substance and arrangement. The record of social and political changes and of their bearing on the changing fashions of the day is full of good reading; and the record of the variations in dress which have satisfied our ancestors is most complete and all embracing. The illustrations cleverly imitate contemporary fashion-plates and designs; and tnough this does not help them to please the eye, it helps to keep them on the side of truth and accuracy—and edification.
