SWIMMING.
♦_ — N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS THRILLING EVENTS AT FINAL CARNIVAL Thrilling races among New Zealand's best sprint swimmers, and between D. P. Lindsay (Manawatu) and N. Crump (Auckland), in the 440 yards eveni, were the features of the third and final day of the national championship meeting held in the St. Albans baths last night. Although the weather was chilly and rain set in during the evening, there was a large crowd of spectators and the enthus- | iasm and excitement at times were inj tense. I The best race of the evening was '• the men's 50 yards invitation scratch ; race, in which there were tive comI petitors. There was a splendid finish j and the time was not much outside I the New Zealand record. j The women's 440 yards champion--1 siiip, for which heals were unnecessary owing to the withdrawal ot Misses F. Sporle •Manawatu, M. Farquhar (Auckland), and A. Morris (Canterbury), was an easy raje for the title-holder. Mis:? M. Leyd;>n. ot Auck.and. Swimming very easily, she occupied third place for 33 1-J yaras, then moved into second place, and in the fifth length established a yard lead. She wis not afterwards troubled, moving away from me rest of trie lie let with every stroke. Miss N. Ludlow, of Auckland, who filled second place, a third of a length behind Miss Leydon, was third for most of the race but moved up well over the last two lengths. She finished 12 yards ahead of the third competitor. Miss M. Bastion of Southland Miss Basstian covered the firs' imee lengths m tu<lead at a very fast pace, but she tired badly in the fifth length. Miss Bass tian. who impressed with her easy ! powerful stvle, had a strenuous time : throughout 'the championships, and 1 covered two miles and a half in Ins : Annette Kcllerman Cup race on Tuos- ! dnv. Her only other placing at the t carnival, which was her first chnmI pionship meeting, was second m the 100 yards. Miss Lc-ydon is the 100 and 440 yards champion, and Mits Ludlow, the "second competitor, the 220 yards champion. Lindsay's 440 1 artls It was anticipated after the performances in the morning heats that the men's 440 yards championship would be a close race between D. P. Lindsay, of Manawatu, the holder of the title, and N. Crump, of Auckland, but Lindsay had a comfortable win. Crump went into the lead from the
start and widened the gap to Lindsay until he was four yards ahead. Then Lindsay sprinted, and it was only a matter of the margin he would win by. He finished four yards to the good, with Thomas third live yards Sway, and McConvillc three yards further back. Lindsav thus holds the titles again for the 440 yards, 880 yards, and one mile, while Crump is the 100 yards and 220 vards champion. The women's 220 yards breaststrokc champion was a swim-over for the title-holder. Miss J. Webster, ot Auckland. There were only two other starters, Miss M. Mathieson. of Otago,. and Miss R. Collins, Canterbury Miss Collins withdrew at the end of the second lap and left Miss Mathieson to fill second place 1(5 yards behind the winner. A Great Race The spectators were brought to their feet in wild enthusiasm by the mens 50 yards invitation scratch race, which resulted in a defeat of the brilliant Maori, W. Whareaitu, by the Otago
boy, W. J. Jarvis. It was a thrilling race the five competitors covering 33 1-3 yaras in a line. Then Jarvis and Whareaitu drew out, and m the 2l\ yards dash to the line, Jarvis made a two feet break and held it. Whareaitu snatched second place from D. If. Svmcs (.Canterbury) by a touch. "The 500 yards inter-club Hying squadron for teams of five was another exciting race, Canterbury A beating Otago by live yards, after being second for 400 yards. Otago went away to a better start than Canterbury, and establishesd a Jead of a yard. This was Held all the way until the last man on the side set out. He was ooposcd by D.
H. Symes, for the Canterburv A team, and in a splendid swim Symes made up the leeway, and gave his side the victory. The final fairies in the water polo championship, between Canterbury A and Otago, and Canterbury B and Otago, were fast and interesting. Canbury A won its game, while the B side could only play to a draw. The A team's performance gave it the title of water polo champion of New Zealand, a title which it held jointly with Auckland last year. Auckland this year did not compete. Some sterling performances were seen when the final of the men's diving championship was judged. The winner was W. Hassan, of Auckland, j Yaldhurst Shield The Yaldhurst Shield, fur most points scored by a province dining j the meeting, was won easily by Auck- ! land, with Canterbury second.
