AUCKLAND PILOTAGE FEES

PREFERENCE TO FOREIGN" LINE ALLEGED U'ttliS ASStKIAIIOK I ELKO RAM.: ! AUCKLAND. February 21. | The Harbour Board, at a special j meeting, considered protests made by the representatives of 13 shipping lines and the Overseas Shipowners' Committee against its decision to reduce pilotage lees by 50 per cent. The shipping lines in a letter asserted that the decision definitely favoured and gave preferential treatment to a foreign shipping line at. the expense of other payers of pilotage. They suggested it would be more equitable to reduce the rates by 33 1-3 per cent, to all payers. The board, after a full discussion, adhered to its decision and the new schedule will operate on March 1. The chairman (Mr T. B. Clay) said the reductions totalled £12,350, of which the Matson liners benefited to the extent of £487,"). The Matson Line received a larger amount of benefit because its vessels called more frequently. All vessels of 4300 tons or over would benefit. Mr C. G. Macindoe advocated a percentage leduclidn, saying that last year 297 vessels paid pilotage but 103 would not benefit by the reductions. A motion in favour of the reductious was strongly supported by the farmers' representative, who said the fanners- needed every cost reduction possible. Other supporters emphasised iivl privileges enjoyed by other countries in respect to mail steamers, etc. OVERSEAS VESSELS FOR LYTTELTON Ruahine. due February 23, from Port Chalmers. To load.
