BYRD'S LATEST PROJECT

♦— SEARCH BY SHIP FOR NEW COAST EXPLORING PACIFIC QCADRANT [Special to Ihe United Press Association. Copyright. By radio, from the Byrd Expedition.J (Received February 13, 7.5 p.m.) February 12. The Be; r of Oakland, carrying a party headed by Rear-Admiral Byrd. left the Bay of Whales today on an exploration voyage eastward. Admiral Byrd hopes to penetrate into the geographical mystery which has eluded .his 12 assaults by ship and aeroplane. Meanwhile the winter party with stores has established ils base at Little America. In planning another attack on Ihe unknown coastal front of the Pacific quadrant of Antarctica Admiral Byrd said: "It is our intention to head directly for Cape Colbeck and continue as far beyond as time and ice permit. I always wanted to make a coasting along the Pacific quadrant, and i think' this fine old wooden ship may be just the vessel to turn the trick. She can venture with impunity into ice which would be fatal for the Jacob Ruppert. Besides, it is possible that conditions are now favourable, as we have had strong southerly winds for a month." If new coast is discovered Admiral Byrd hopes to make a reennnaisance by dog-team. Little America Busy Little America is a scene of bustling activity. New shacks for the winter party and various scientific observation huts and other structures are under construction. Supplies are still being moved in from the caches on the ice, which continues to crack. The bridge covering one crevasse 40 feet wide is continually moving, and the whole of the bay ice is apparently moving imperceptibly, with a tremendous shearing movement, toward the Bay of Whales. If the bridge should fall it would be impossible to move the remainder of the supplies to Little America. The expedition's cows are temporarily quartered in a tent while the more commodious cow barn is utilised as a bunk house and headquarters for Commander George Noville, executive officer at the base.
