TROTTING NOTES

I Reminders Nominations for the Invercargill Trotting Club's annual meeting will close on Friday next. Nominations for the Wellington Trotting Club's autumn meeting will close on February 22 at 8 p.m. Acceptances for the trotting events to be decided at the Gore Racing Club's meeting are due on Friday. Acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club's autumn meeting will close on Tuesday next. Engaged at New Brighton G. McKendry has again put Warbird into work, in view of New Brighton engagements. At the Canterbury Park meeting on January 2, Chenwood won the mile saddle race in 2min 11 3-ssec, and he is entitled to support in a similar class of race at New Brighton, where he is set to do 2min 13sec. In this case, however, Chenwood will start from the back of the field, giving away 36 yards. A Formidable Task Real Boy has been asked to concede 168 yards to a big field of trotters in the Improvers' Handicap at New Brighton, a task that will probably prove too big for him. Walter Wrack is credited with possessing a lot of speed, but his public performances have not been impressive. , _ , T. G. Fox has nominated Desert Maiden for the mile saddle race at New Brighton. A smart beginning will find her troublesome. Speedy but Nervous Sadie Axworthy put up two sterling efforts at the last Wellington meeting, but though she showed extreme speed at Forbury Park, she lost all chance by misbehaviour at the start. At present she is nervous, but racing should help to settle her down. Evenly Matched Tangatti and Real Huon engaged in two stirring battles at Forbury Park and honours were about even. Another opportunity to prove which is the better will be provided at New Brighton. They appear to be evenly matched.

An Improving racer Elvo, trained in the Ashburlon district, has registered several smart performances since the start of the season, and she has been given a chance to win another slake in the Dash Handicap at New Brighton, in which she is handicapped on 2min 59sec for a mile and a quarter. Young and Promising Gold Claim, Eddystone, Peter Parrish. Real Burton, Sadie Axworthy, Social Pest, rind Sylvia Sydney, on the limit of the Improvers' Handicap, represent a formidable contingent. The back-marker. Dark Girl, is set to yivc away 60 yards. R. B. Berry's Team At this early stage the chances of Lilian Bond in the Flying Handicap at New Brighton are attractive. She is a fine pacer and improving. Colorado at one stage looked like developing into a New Zealand Cup horse. He appeared to lose all form, but may come up better than ever after the long spell he has had. R. B. Berry has an addition to his team in Charteris Vale, a three-year-old filly by Brigand—Princess Galindo, bred and owned by Mr W. Anderson.

May Need Experience War Betty, in A. Hendriksen's stable, shows considerable promise, but may need another race or two before shecan be backed with confidence. Strong Representation. R. B. Berry is a good supporter of the New Brihton Club's meeting, and amongst the horses he has engaged at the coming fixture are:—Sylvia Sydney Attorney, David McElwyn, Lilian Bond, and Colorado. M. B. Edwards has Endurance, Summit, Eddystone, Royal Chcnault. Nobleman, Nimbus, Real Belle, and Royal Parade. This represents solid support from two of tne leading .stables. Unhopplcd Trotters The promising young trotter. Prince Harvester, will be given a chance in the Improvers' Handicap at New Brighton. He is a good beginner and a steady trotter. Midland, a useful trotter a year or two back, has been off the scene for some time, but is due to make a reappearance on Saturday week. Nell Volo, who won three races at the Auckland summer meeting, has been under veterinary treatment for some time, and is reported to be making good progress. Timaru T.C. The Timaru Trotting Cup, which will be decided on March 10, carries a stake of £230, and is for horses that can do 4min 34scc or better. The stake includes a trophy valued at £ls. This is the principal event at. the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting, but other races that will demand the attention of owners include (he Fairlie Handicap, of 130 sovs, one mile and a quarter, 2min 52see class, and the Washdyke Handicap, of 130 sovs. one mile and a quarter, 2min 47scc class. Nominations for all events close on Wednesday, February 2{S.

A Converted Trotter Twelve months ago fiuin was regarded as a useful pacer and he caused a surprise at Ashburlon on Boxing Doy with a capital exhibition of tinhopplcd trotting that enabled him to win the Win.slow Handicap like u horse that had done nothing else but (rot. Because of this performance he was hailed as something approaching a champion in the making, but though backed down to a short, price at the Canterbury Park meeting, he quite failed to show the form expected of him. He was certainly asked to meet a very speedy trotter in Raclaim, who was well suited by the mile and a half races. Ruin will be given a chance to redeem himself at the New Brighton meeting on February 24, and on this occasion he will receive 36 yards from Raclaim. It was on a grass track that he showed such good form at Ashburton, and he will be racing under similar conditions at New Brighton. Peter Parrish R. 11. Bennetts is giving Peter Parrish solid work at Addington in preparation for the New Brighton meeting on Saturday week, and in view of his racing this season the Guy Parrish gelding should run well in the Belfast Handicap, a 3min 40sec class race, in which he is awarded the limit. At the Ashburton County Racing Club's meeting in December he finished a good second to Elvo in the Melrose Handicap of a mile and a half, after registering 3min 25 3-ssec, and at the Greymouth meeting last month he won the Westland Handicap in 3min 28 3-ssec. and was second to a good performer in Bingen Palm in the Victoria Park Handicap. Peter Parrish may not reach the highest class in pacing circles, but he has made a deal of improvement of late and he may be quite capable of holding his own with the horses he will meet on Saturday week. A Sprinter and Stayer The Westport-owncd mare Kernbrook Lass has the reputation of being a pacer above the average, and in her engagements on the West Coast during the Christmas and New Year holidays she showed exceptional speed over short courses, and a fair amount of stamina in her two mile races. Badly interfered with in the final event at Greymouth, she later unwound a great burst of speed and may have been unlucky to be beaten by Admiral Wrack. A few days later she won the B. P. McMahon Memorial Handicap, of two miles, in 4min 29 2-ssec.- at Reefton, after giving away 60 yards start. Such a good performance suggests her as a possible winner of the Denton Memorial Handicap at New Brighton, where she figures on the end of a 4min 40sec class. By Author Dillon from Locanda Queen, Fernbrook Lass inherits good strains of pacing blood that should enable her to go a distance.

Stakes Ensure Nominations Small fields are more numerous now than they were a few years ago, and this is the reason in many cases for the drop in totalisator business. Then again, the reason for small fields is not hard to And, for some clubs have so reduced their stakes that owners arc not prepared to travel with their horses on the off chance of winning a stake that will barely cover expenses. Christchurch clubs are fortunately placed in that there are any number of local hordes available to make big fields, and this is especially noticeable in the big nominations received by the New Brighton Trotting Club. This club does not aspire to cater for the crack pacers and trotters, but rather concentrates on providing races for maiden and improving horses. There are any number of these horses available, but while the club shows a commendable spirit in catering for the poorer classes, it might find it an advantage to include on its programme one race for high-class pacers with a stake in keeping with the class. Good horses will always attract the public, and the better they are the bigger the number anxious to see them. Leading: Trainer According to statistics compiled by the "New Zealand Referee" M. B. Edwards heads the list of winning trainers with 19 wins to his credit since August 1. Others prominent in the list include F. J. Smith 18, W. J. Tomkinson 15, J. J. Kennerley 11, J. Bryce 10, O. E. Hooper 10. R. Dunn 10. L. A. Maidens 9, R. B. Berry 9, and C. S. Donald 8.

Mr R. N. Rutherford presided at a meeting of the committee of the Waiau Racing Club. The secretary presented an interim balance-sheet of the recent race meeting, showing a credit balance of approximately £2O. Several recommendations were received regarding handicaps and distance of races, and it was decided to consider these at the annual general meeting in August. In consideration of his long membership of the club and his past support, Mr F. C. Forbes was elected a life member. The president remarked that the success of the meeting augured well for the future prospects of the club. A sub-committee was set up to help the club by some entertainment during the winter. It was decided to recommend to next year's committee several improvements to the course and appurtenances.
