CRITICISM OF THE MAYOR
♦ MR R. T. BAILEY'S STATEMENT OPINION OF PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSIONER "Che action of Mr R. T. Bailey, officer in charge of the Labour Department Christchurch, in criticising the Mayor of Christchurch 'Mr D. G. Sullivan. ; M.P.I for protesting again:.'. police I being sent to the Rapaki unemployment relief works, was the .'.ubject of a letter written by the Mayor to the Public Service Commissioner, Mr P. VerschafTelt, whose attention was drawn to the statement made to the newspapers by Mr Bailey. The reply received by the Mayor from Mr VerschafTelt is as follows: "With reference to your letter forwarding press cuttings of statements made by Mr R. T. Bailey, officer in charge of the Labour Department. Christchurch, to which you inform me you take the strongest possible exception, and enquire if this is permissible under the regulations: I have to advise that the comments of the officer referred to. if they were correctly reported, would be a distinct breach and such as should not have been made by any officer ot the Public Service. "I am taking (he matter up with the department and the officer concerned, and trust that you will have no further cause for complaint." I In commenting on the letter the Mayor said yesterday that in taking (the matter up with the Public Sci'ivice Commissioner he was not actuated by any spirit of vindictiveness toi wards the officer in charge of the Labiour Department, but he hoped that | the Chamber of Commerce and other I Tory organisations which had commented on the action of the Mayor 'would now realise how ridiculous they jhad been.
