THE PROCEEDS OF ART UNIONS
TO THE KDITOS OP Tli« tEESS. Sir,—While discussion on the above is going on it would ba interesting to know just what proportion of the money sent into an art union goes to in.? body that is helped. I notice that an English writer, Bolton C. Waller, M.A.. has worked it out for the Irish Sweepstake as follows. The purchaser pays 10s. Of this the seller takes Is Bd, leaving 8s 4d. The same seller, or another agent, takes lOd (his discount on booki, leaving 7s Gel, which is handed to the Hospital Trust. Of that 7s 6d, expenses (including payments to promoters and to sellers of winning tickets) take lOd, leaving 6s Bd. The Government takes sid, leaving Gs 24d. The hospitals take Is 4*d, leaving 4s lOd, which goes into the prize fund. And he sunk: it up: "Therefore, if you are a philanthropist, you give someone 10s to hand Is 4Jd to charity; if your aim is to gain a fortune, you pay 10s for less than a 5s chance." . One wonders how it works out in New Zealand?— Yours, etc.. J.J. February 5, 1934.
