Serious difficulties will soon obstruct the practice of commemorating distinguished persons by giving their names to Paris streets. The fact; is that the roll of the illustrious dead grows more rapidly than the metropolitan directors- And. if present tendencies continue, it will not be long before there are not enough streets to go round. Foreseeing this danger, a municipal councillor has proposed that the two eminent doctors whom France has lost recently should be kept in the public mind by a '•Rue Roux-Calmette." A well-known writer proposes the addition of the name of Painleve to those of the two distinguished bacteriologists. Indeed, he extends the idea still further. The whole street nomenclature of Paris, he considers, might be revolutionised by grouping togethernames of persons associated, either by the dates of their death or by their achievements. Considerable economy in nameplat'js, il is suggested, might be secured by a Boulevard Diderot-Rousseau-Voltaire and a Rue Racine-Mnllere-Boilcau. It is admitted, however, that the plan has grave practical objections. Paris has been very generous in bestowing foreign names on her thoroughfares. Merely between the Champs Elysees and the Seine there are avenues dedicated to King George. President Wilson, King Peter of Serbia, and the City of Tokyo. In the same area there are also" a United States square and a Rue Goethe. For a Run invented by a bov of 13 a German firm has offered £SOO. The boy. according to medical report, is mentally deficient within the meaning of the Education Act, but not under the Mental Deficiency Act.
