The presence of algae, or duckweed, in Lake Mangamahoe, ti-.e ■• source of New Plymouth's water 1 supply, is causing concern to the borough authorities. This duckweed is similar to that in Lake l'upuke. at Takapuna. Though the growths are not injurious lu health, their existence is undesirable, and an effort is being made to eradicate the weed. The weed grows in shallow water near the shore, and an attempt was made to clear it from the lake by pulling it up and throning it out of the water. This proved useless, but the wood is nowbeing combated with diluted bluestone, which, if it is as successful as it has been elsewhere, should destroy the growths. It is only at certain times, when the mains are supplied directly from the high head at Lake Mangamahoe, that the water is affected by the duckweed. That occurs only when there is a large use of water in the town, but usually, when the demand is normal, the Hlters arc used and the weed is strained out. Regular bacteriological and chemical tests of water front New Plymouth mains by Government analysts showed the water was of good quality for drinking.
