GROCERS' AWARD
UNION EXECUTIVES DEBATE POSITION
A meeting of trades union executives, called by the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council, was held on Saturday evening to consider the grocers' award. Mr T. Shankland presided. The following resolution was carried: "That this meeting of the executives of Canterbury unions, having heard the facts that led up to the recent decision of the Supreme Court in the case of the grocers, is of the opinion that representations should be made to the Government to amend the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act in order to prevent a recurrence of a similar position, being of the opinion that the Arbitration Court should make the final dccisjqn in all matters of an industrial nature; and that a committee be set up to devise such ways and means as are deemed necessary to meet the situation pertaining to the grocers' dispute."
The decison referred to arose out of a case in which the proprietors of certain chain stores applied for a writ of a certiori, and had an agreement between the grocers' assistants and the master grocers quashed.
