ANGLO-FRENCH TRADE
No Agreement Yet Attained
RETALIATION THE ONLY COURSE OPEN (UNITED press association—by electric TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) .(Received February 4, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, February 2. The "Daily Telegraph" says that in view of the French Government's attitude, the British Government's decision to impose retaliatory duties will be enforced in the coming week. Details of the French reply are not disclosed, but it is known to be entirely disappointing and unsatisfactory.
To-day's consultations between the Foreign Office and the Board of Trade resulted in the decision that retaliation was the only course left open. The time limit, which expires on Monday, may be extended a few days to permit careful drafting of the schedule of new duties. Ministers feel that as France intends to use quotas to counter trade negotiations, only retaliatory duties will enable Great Britain to negotiate on equal terms.
