PRAISE FOR SOUTHERN LAKES
GERMAN CONSUL IMPRESSED The beauties of the southern lake district have greatly impressed Dr. R. Asmis, Consul-General for Germany in Australia and New Zealand. Dr. and Mrs Asmis returned tc Christchurch yesterday after visiting Mount Cook, Queenstown, Kingston, Lake Manapouri, the Eglington Valley, Lumsden, Dunedin, and Waimate. He and his party travelled in their own car and found the roads generally in splendid condition.
Describing his visit to the southern lakes, Dr. Asmis said they were all so beautiful that it was impossible to say one was more beautiful than the other. They enjoyed wonderful conditions all through their journey and so were able to enjoy at its best some of the beautiful and stupendous scenery. He described the views from the Hermitage and the Ball Hut as marvellous.
The wonderful work of the automobile associations in furnishing the roads with every possible sign had enabled them to proceed with no difficulty at all. Some of the roads were not very good, but generally they were excellent, and he was full of praise for the southern tourist resorts, their scenic beauty, the quiet, wonderful country about them, their roads, and their hotels. He was thoroughly satisfied with the steamer service on Lake Wakatipu, where his car was loaded with little delay.
Dr. and Mrs Asmis intend to go to the Franz Josef Glacier to-mor-row and from there to Nelson and the North Island. They will leave New Zealand at Auckland on February 23.
