ATHLETICS

CANTERBURY AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS FINE RACING AND FAST TIMES T. G. BROADWAY IN GREAT FORM A long succession of outstanding performances at Lancaster Park on Saturday afternoon made the 1933-34 Canterbury amateur athletic championships one of the finest meetings the centre has had. Race filter race produced times within the national standards, a few of them not far behind the records. The day Avas all Unit athletes and officials could wish for, with warm sunshine, little wind, and tracks in wonderful condition. There Avere about 2000 spectators. This year the parade of competitors, an event Avhich is fast becoming a permanent part of athletic meetings the world over, Avas introduced for the first time at the Canterbury championships. Tho teams competing, each Avith its club banner, marched irom the north end of the oval past ,he stands and back to the starling P',mt. The parade Avas well appreciated by the spectators, and the various ti\;ms received continuous applause as 11 icy 'Jpassed the stands, J. B. MacFarlane AgainThe first of the outstanding perl'<.nuances came early in the afternoon, Avhen the national sprint champion, J. B. MacFarlane (Old Boys) Avon his heat of the 100 yards in lOscc. MacFarlane simply left the rest of the field standing, and again in tno final he romped home to win the title easily for a second year. The figures for the final were 10 l-ssec. G. C. Gordon (Sydenham) Avas up with the champion over the first 50 yards, and looked like making a hard race of it; but an injury received early in the season had its effect, and he dropped back to third place before the tape was reached, finishing behind W. J. Fitzsimmons, Avho has been running exceptionally well during the last few weeks. When the final of the 220 yards came later in the afternoon MacFarlane had things all his own Avay again, and finished four yards ahead of Fitzsimmons, Avith J. D. Carmichacl (University), winner of this year's junior 220 yards, in third place. MacFarlanes' time was 22 2-ssec, equalling the New Zealand standard figures. Both sprints proved beyond doubt that MacFarlane Is in as fine a form as ever and should be the hardest man to beat Avhen he defends his New Zealand titles at Wellington next Aveek. Milner Unlucky. The spectators at the New Zealand championships at Lancaster Park last year will remember how F. Sharpley was leading the field home in the 120 yards hurdles when he hit the last hurdle and fell heavily. On Saturday H. W. Milner, the University hurdler, had the same misfortune which was made even harder by the fact that he had three yards on the rest of the field when he came down. L. C. Woodward, the Technical hurdler, who has been one of the most consistent competitors during the season, had his long training rewarded with first place. E. G. Young (University >. the holder of the title, finished second, and Milner got to his feet again to run home third. Time, 16 2-ssec.

The one mile walking championship went to F. W. Dukes (Sydenham). The win Avas one of the most popular of the afternoon, for Dukes has done a long period of consistent training by himself and has been returning better figures each time he appears. The time for the mile was 7min 35 1-5 sec. J. G. D. Ward (University) finished second, SO yards behind Dukes, Avith L. BroAvn, a promising young Sydenham Avalker, in third place. Triumph for Broadway.

The hurdles were followed by the long-awaited half-mile, in which T. G. Broadway (Canterbury), the New Zealand champion, and D. F. Anderson, the Canterbury champion, and joint holder of the New Zealand record, were expected to fight out a thrilling race. It was a triumph for Broadway, who proved beyond doubt that he is by far the best half-miler in Canterbury. Broadway Avent out and made a fast pace early in the race, then allowed Anderson to lead for the rest of the distance until the last bend was approached. Broadway came down the straight at a terrific pace, which left Anderson standing. The New Zealand champion won by 12 yards, in Imm 55 4-ssec—one second outside the record. G. P. Irving (Sumner) ran an excellent race into third place 12 yards behind Anderson.

The 440 yards was a triumph again for Broadway, Avho capped his brilliant half-mile with a quarter in 49 4-sscc. Once again Anderson v/as outrun, although he made a great attempt to get up in the straight. H. McCasky (Sumner) ran a fine race into third place inches behind Anderson. Broadway had several yards to spare with half the distance covered, but coming up the straight the other two were gaining on him. He finished a yard ahead of Anderson. First Title for Westport.

The Westport team, the first sent from the West Coast for the championships, won the 220 yards hurdles, held this year for the first time. E. Holder, the Westport hurdler, was in front practically all the way, and although challenged strongly by J. D. Nelligan (Canterbury) he stayed on to win by a yard. G. B. Eathorne (Old Boys) was going well when he fell near the bend. He got up again to take third place. Holder's time was 26 3-ssec. The 100 yards -junior championship final, which followed, saw a great finish, in which E. H. Wickham (Technical) just managed to get home ahead of G. Busfield (Sydenham) in 10 3-ssec. Miss F. Gudsell (Canterbury) won the women's 100 yards title again, with half a yard to spare from Miss K. Callinan (Technical). Miss Callinan led to within four yards of the tape, but Miss Gudsell came up w.itb. a terrific finish, wining in 11 3-ssec. The 440 yards hurdles went to A. T. Anderson (University), the present holder of the title, who came home a yard ahead of J. D. Nelligan (Canterbury) in 57 2-sscc. A Great Mile. C. H. Matthews (Technical), making his first appearance at an open championship meeting, won the mile easily , in 4min 21 3-sscc, the fastest championship time run in New Zealand. C. W. Bell (Sydenham) hung closely to him for three laps, but was practically exhausted over the last 440 I yards and dropped to third place behind his club mate, W. L. Sargison. Matthews' run dispelled the idea that ne was no longer able to go far below 4min SOsec; ar.d it put him definitely ln the running for the New Zealand title. The inter-club relay, the fastest yet run for the Canterbury championship, was a fine race between University ?? OS. ydenham - University led over the 880 yards and the 440 yards, but ja the tsgaate. end: a line

run by Fitzsimmons put Sydenham ahead by two yards, in 3min 41 3-ssec. The Old Boys' team was third. The women's relay was won by Technical, with Canterbury second and Westport third. There were no outstanding performances in the field events. The high jump was again won by W. S. Bretteu (Presbyterian), with sft 7in; the hop, step, and jump by L. E. Smith (Old Boys), with 44ft 10Jin; the throwing the javelin by F. T. J. . (Technical); the pole vault by N. W. Mulvey (University), at 10ft 9m; and the Jutting the shot by H. M. S. Dawson (University), with 36ft 7Jin. Inter-club Championship. The struggle for the championship and Watson No. 10 challenge cup has seldom, if ever, been Kto^ P fought - it-as this year The title was in doubt to the last event, which Mulyey won for Urn versity, and put his club aheadl wrth 40 points to Old Boys &■ For along time the issue was in doubt among five clubs-Umversity.
