WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

LITTLE RIVER The Little River branch of the Women's Institute met in the Coronation Library for the monthly meeting. Mrs J. McGowan presided. There was a fair attendance of members and great interest was taken in a talk on aviation, given by Miss Hilda Montgomery. There were two competitions held. The first, for a decorated bowl of flowers, was won by Mrs H. Lewthwaite first, with Miss W. Stott second. The second competition, for stepping the distance between two pegs was won by Miss Melva Webster and Miss Beatrice Line (equal) first, Miss Norma French being third. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs T. E. Stanbury, Mrs Geo. Breitmeyer, and Miss Phylis Wakelyn. During the afternoon, the president, Mrs McGowan, on behalf of the Women's Institute, presented Miss P. Wakelyn, who will shortly be married, with a bedroom clock, and wished her every happiness in her new home.

HORNBY At tha monthly meeting of the Hornby Women's Institute, Mrs A. Mackie (vice-president) presided. Mrs JMackie, on behalf of the meeting, ex--1 tended to Miss D. Hicks, who is about to be married, congratulations, and good wishes for her future happiness. Miss Hicks responded. Motions of sympathy were passed to Mrs Freeman and family, and to Mr and Mrs Maclaine and family, in their recent bereavements. Nominations for the election of a new committee were received. A sales table in aid of the institute funds was held with satisfactory results. Miss Blackmore (president of the Home Economics Association) gave an interesting lecture, illustrated by charts, on "Foods

and Their Relation to Health." Miss Blackmore was accorded a vote of thanks. In the home competition in making a plate of pikelets, Mrs W. Richardson (Islington) was awarded first prize, Mrs Hepburn being second. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs Davis.
