after losing the first set 1-6. RhodesWilliams, who stroked freely and accurately throughout, could not break through in the second set until the twentieth game. United made a clean sweep of the remaining singles and again had a clear advantage in the doubles. Cathedral's First Win. The only Addington player to offer any opposition to his United 111. opponent was I. J. Corich, New Zealand junior champion, whose steadiness and opportunistic shots kept B. B. Loughnan thinking in the first set. The more experienced player, Loughnan won the second set easily. W. R. Robinson, returning to competitive tennis after a spell of a few weeks, showed good form in beating D. G. Silvester, who has extended most of the leading players this season, very convincingly. Cashmere's defeat by Cathedral was owing largely to the absence of D. F. Glanville. Playing in first place R. Browning went down to J. W. Arnold, winning only three games. The Cathed* ral man kept the ball in play and allowed Browning to beat himself with his errors. W. Deans gained Cashmere's only singles victory by beating the hard-hitting F. O. Schmidt after losing the first set. Cashmere made a good bid to recover their lost ground in the doubles, but although they won both matches, making matches and sets even, Cathedral had an advantage on games. Competition Points.
