PARCELS BY POST
i 4 _ SUGGESTION FOR AMENDMENT OF REGULATIONS A suggestion that it might be possible to amend the Postal Regulations so that parcels were classified for postage by measurement rather than by weight, as at present, was made to the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce at its meeting last night in a letter.
The letter, which was from Mr Stewart E. Mair, representing a Boston firm of wool merchants and topmakers, stated:— "The parcels brancli of the Christchurch Post Office has to-day refused to accept a parcel addressed to Sydney, Australia, because it weighs half a pound more than 111b, which, they inform us, is the maximum weight they can accept for parcel post delivery. This parcel measures llin by 7Jin by 7iin, I and it occurs to us that the Government is making unnecessarily irksome regulations in not allowing us to mail this, whereas they have frequently accepted from us many parcels a good deal more bulky but slightly less than 111b. It would seem that a better plan would be to have a maximum based on measurement rather than weight We can easily visualise a parcel sufficiently small to be put in one's coat pocket and still weighing more than 111b, and it• seems absurd to us that this, under present regulations, should be refused by the parcels branch of the Pest Office.'' The subject was referred to the postal committee of the chamber for consideration and report.
